Parliament, Dec. 11 (Daily Mirror)- The entire population of Sri Lanka is to be registered with the police in the wake of increased crimes, Minister of Public Security Tiran Allas told Parliament today.

Responding to a question raised by MP Mano Ganesan that the Tamil community, especially those in Colombo are being registered by the police.

"We have decided to register the entire population irrespective of the ethnic groups they belong to. I will see to it that registration forms printed in all three languages will be distributed," he said.

"We will create an online data base of the Sri Lankan population so that anyone can be identified at any time," he added.

Bull shit, manual forms. Stonage methods. Why not police person capture all records using a tablet by scanning national ID. OCR!!

Neel gamege Tuesday, 12 December 2023 12:46 PM

Yes, everything on database, but nothing will change, from Gota time we have set up new committees and programmes but atthe everything is in vain. First of rehabilitate the entire police force. From top to bottom.

In Sri Lanka, every citizen has a National ID card, which should (in theory) have the correct details. The system should be linked to all relevant systems including hospitals, immigration, the Police etc. They are trying to re-invent a new system, which could cost taxpayers a lot of money. Is the government taking advice from professionals?

    Voter Monday, 11 December 2023 01:17 PM

Make sure to include all important questionnaires like offshore bank account details etc…in the registration form…..

    Onlooker Monday, 11 December 2023 01:33 PM

So Big Brother can track us. Most criminals are not in the general public but in higher positions and never prosecuted. So wrong reasons for this registration. Invasion of privacy.

This is what dictatorial countries like Iran, North Korea, and some paranoid European countries do. This is not acceptable to Sri Lankans , we are a free people. This Minister may be a madman but certainly the people are not. Practically this dangerous move wouldn’t help at all in either in prevention or detection of crime.

This seems like something that is a major violation of the constitution and personal rights. Imagine what this information can do in wrong hands. Such a brainless idea.

Size of the Sri Lankan Police is bigger than the armed forces in some third world countries. Cut down the size of the Police and introduce middle class boys with university degree straight into ASP position. This is the only way to deal with the out of control crime in Sri Lanka. Registering the entire population with the Police is tantamount to a Police State and the people in Jaffna would firmly protest.

Start with politicians, and police families.

I wish to remind Minister Alles, that he was a Traitor to Mother Lanka when he took bags of Money and gave LTTE. He himself admitted recently in a you tube presentation how he carried the money. His name must top the list

What could go wrong ? After all these politicians are all clean, honest, patriotic members of society, who have never committed a crime nor have been associated with any criminals. We are a lucky bunch to have them as our leaders.

Sri Lanka - the Police State. This is an infringement of people's rights. What next? Gas Chamber?

Mike Jeya Monday, 11 December 2023 02:29 PM

Why can't you get it from the census

    CITIZEN Monday, 11 December 2023 02:57 PM

    NIC?????

    VJ Monday, 11 December 2023 03:45 PM

This is just to show the people that they are doing something about the increase in crimes. Everyone other than the criminals will register with the police. There is voters registrations, NIC, only those below 18 have to be added. The country needs to seriously look into cutting waste and duplicating records. There are systems used by police in other countries where the next crime location could be predicted based on collection and analysis of crime data. The minister has yet to justify his post.

Tiran Alles Fomenting idealistic Police State!!! Culmination of Dictatorship!!!???

    Vis Monday, 11 December 2023 04:05 PM

Pls intake people with brain to police department. You have phone registration, NIC, RMV, Birth certificates, voting list, bank records, etc how many ways you have to track and control, If you are unable to catch crminals with all the training, equipments and network resources, and electronic surveilances you have to quetion yourself first.

    Mahila Monday, 11 December 2023 08:07 PM

That's because the people these undereducated politicians have recruited to the Police force, are all illiterate "Modaya's", as employees to exclusively carryout menial duties - fit enough to only clean Politicians cars and houses – not investigative activities, acumen and critical thinking ability!!!????

Gong Alles Monday, 11 December 2023 04:17 PM

WHAT THIS MAN'S ULTIMATE REGISTER WILL SEE IS NAMES OF ALL INNOCENT AND LAW ABIDING CITIZENS OF THE COUNTRY. THE REAL CRIMINALS, FRAUDSTERS, DRUG KING PINS, INCLUDING THE PLUNDERS IN THE PARLIAMENT AND THOSE WHO OPERATE FROM DUBAI ETC, WILL BE MISSING IN THE REGISTER?

    Buddhist Monday, 11 December 2023 05:17 PM

When you have an IGP accused of human rights violations what's the point in registering the citizens? How many times has SL registered its citizens? Why waste money? If the Police and the Judiciary act according to the law the crimes can be controlled.

Common. Collect it from the GS. What about people moving temporarily from one city to another for jobs etc ?

    Samantha Tuesday, 12 December 2023 05:49 AM

What is this man saying? Look he has no idea what he is talking about. To do that he need two third majority and supreme court ruling in favour on his proposal. It violates the freedom clauses of the constitution. Violation of constitution is a reason to curtail his civil rights. Ask him to go to hell.

wickrama wijayasiri Tuesday, 12 December 2023 07:56 AM

So, do you want to request the criminals to leave behind their Identity number or a QR code before they leave the scene of the crime? In all Western block countries people could be identified as required, yet there is crime. Are you making statements to make your presence noted?
