Colombo, July 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Government has approved the expansion of the Kandy Urban Wastewater Management Project to include the premises of the University of Peradeniya.
The project, launched in 2010 under a loan agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is being implemented in four packages to improve wastewater management facilities in the Kandy area.
Following a request by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, a feasibility study was conducted to examine the possibility of including the university premises in the project. The study confirmed that the university could be incorporated into the project.
Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply to expand the project scope to cover the university premises.
The expansion is estimated to cost Rs. 2 billion, with Rs. 800 million to be funded through a JICA loan and the remaining Rs. 1.2 billion from local funds.
The project period has also been extended until December 31, 2027.
