Getambe, March 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Anunayake of the Ramanya Nikaya Most Venerable Kappitiyagoda Sirivimala Thera stated yesterday that if the current trend persists, the entire parliament will soon resemble an elders' home and also emphasized the importance of elderly members stepping down to allow the youth the opportunity to contribute to the country's development.
The Anunayake Thera emphasized this, when former Minister of Sports, MP Roshan Ranasinghe yesterday (14) visited him at the Getambe Temple.
"Government employees are retiring after reaching the age of 60 because they are no longer able to work hard. However, there are many people who have surpassed the retirement age in the Sri Lankan Parliament. Some individuals retire from government service and transition to parliament. They enter parliament to pursue their next job, showing no inclination to make way for the younger generation and vacate their positions. They are seen struggling to reach parliament with the aid of a walking stick," the Thera emphasized.
"They have no regard for the people of the country. Their focus is on selling the country's resources to benefit their own generation. If an ordinary citizen in the country steals fifty or one hundred rupees, they will face the maximum punishment. However,if a powerful individual steals billions of rupees, the law does not seem to apply to them properly," the Anunayaka Thera said.
The Thera also emphasized that elderly MPs should leave parliament. If they do not leave voluntarily, new laws should be enacted to remove them.

It is very rare to see Buddhist Monks in Sri Lanka making statements of this nature in Sri Lanka. Many monks including top Mahanayake's have become pimps to Politicians and only make statements of support to all the criminality, thuggery and corruption perpetrated by them.

Absolutely correct. Most there to collect material things for themselves till their brains and hands can’t function. Seems the actual teaching of Buddhism and other religions did not reach these doomed politicians. Just doing chanting and giving some contributions to seek forgiveness every-time corruption or murder is committed.

Many of them over 70. Limit the age Or how many time goes into Parliament. Put some qualifications Test them before nomination to contest

Venerable Anunayka thero had forgotten that he is one of the main contributors to the present parliament. Also, the sanga sabha's of all the nikaya's have already become elders homes. So the venerable thero can set an example by handing over the reigns to young preists

Intelligent older people would never spend their final years in parliament or as ministers. In many old people, the brain still works perfectly, but not in parliamentarians. In these cases, however, in addition to their old age, which alone disqualifies them from their position, there is another component. Either they have always been stupid or they suffer from dementia caused either by decades of alcohol abuse (Korsakoff-Syndrome) or by Alzheimer's.

The Parliamentarians are elected by people from public vote. Please do not insult the public and the Democratic system. But most of the temples are governed by very old Yellow robed hacks who are not elected but own the temples by force.
