Colombo, Feb 7 (Daily Mirror) - Due to the ongoing financial crisis and import restrictions, the government announced yesterday that it would be impossible to import vehicles for a considerable period of time.
Addressing the weekly cabinet media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardana yesterday said that import restrictions will be relaxed carefully and gradually.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will inform the cabinet about how they take decisions to relax the import restrictions gradually.
Meanwhile, raising his voice for the proposed amendments for foreign exchange orders already implemented for implementing the plan to lift the foreign exchange limitations step by step, the minister said that Sri Lanka is bound to lift the administrative measurements taken step by step when the country’s balance of payments reaches a steady stance as per the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) report on Sri Lanka.

When you keep spending lavishly for independence ceremonies, overseas visits, rotting politicians, there won't be money for anything else.
GET PRIORITIES STRAIGHT Wednesday, 07 February 2024 12:20 PM
Yes. Priority is to import vegetables and eggs. Look to long term development of public transport.

What is the considerable period. Is it until next election, just to show the voters? Normally finances are planned for the year and the Minister must say no imports in 2024 or what

Well you see he cant say anything like the 2500 rupee story here. Even to plan out for the country to import vehicles and other things they should first increase foreign revenue. They dont have plans, only plan is to beg and go behind the international community.

However, we will still see new luxury cars on the roads. Ministers and their friends will live a good life while the rest rot...

All BS. Look at the super luxury cars that have been imported during the last few years with an import ban in place. WHAT A JOKE

Which is why this decision is made. I don't see your point.

Make Some Sri Lankan models of cars, vans, lorries and busses. We have had enough imports of vehicles. Now, the world is changing. Our engineers are good enough to make cars. If Malaysians can do it why cannot, if Indians can do it why cannot we do it, if some Asian countries do it why can not we do it? Stop all importing culture, after all, all those imported are done to please politicians, and their cohort, Not the poor people of this country benefit from all. Politicians shamelessly exploited poor people of this country

Can the Minister clarify on sending a vehicle by migrants/expats to their family or even by a returning migrant/expat? This doesn't require to use SL reserves, in fact government gets customs duty as an income.

Anyone living abroad must be allowed to bring their vehicle if it complied the local standard. This is their own foreign exchange.
