The government has no plans whatsoever to increase the prices of eggs and chicken in the future, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

During a media briefing, he said that the import of eggs was a temporary measure to address shortages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He further stated that there are no plans to continue the imports in the future. The government's focus is to boost local egg and chicken production instead. By supporting and increasing local production, the government aims to ensure a steady and sustainable supply of eggs and chicken within the country, the Minister added.

"We have identified that there is an attempt to increase the prices of eggs, but we will not let them increase. We practice the same with chicken prices. I will not let the chicken prices to increase.

"We have recently become aware of potential attempts to increase the prices of eggs in the market," he said.

"However, rest assured that we are committed to preventing any such price hikes. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions to protect consumers from any unjustified increases in prices," Amaraweera assured. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Consumers have hard time now. Silly to not want to continue imports if that brings relief to the public.

We care a damn for the local producers if they continue making superfluous profits. Govt must continue importing eggs and even start getting chicken. All producers and manufacturers are capitalising on the ban on imports and have no concern for consumers. Hell with them

Just import eggs. Don’t stop. Social media attempts to condemn imported eggs. They go to the extent of saying the membrane between the white and shell is plastic - how stupid ? It has to be Sri Lankans to believe such stories! Then the Indian chicken has to be robots. Import chicken as well and we will have better quality food.

Only when you open your mouth the prices of eggs and chicken go up in prices since the Egg Producers wholesalers retailers know that something is wrong and they have a field day in dictating prices whilst the Consumer Protection Authority Officers are having a good rest and when the media spotlights this they will get into action. Continuous monitoring by the Consumer Protection authority by their flying squads is sine qua non.!!!!!!!!

Eggs and chicken prices are cheaper in such a developed country like Australia than in Sri Lanka, where the salaries of workers are more than 10 times higher than in SL. So imagine the plight of our inhabitants

There is no need to plan. The prices will increase automatically.
