Colombo, April 8 (Daily Mirror) - There is a higher demand for fireworks this year than in the previous festive seasons, but there is less demand for several firework items, All-Island Fireworks Manufacturers Association (AIFMA) President Dinesh Fernando said.
Addressing the media, he said the distribution process of all types of fireworks has started around the country to meet the needs of the people.
The manufacturing of fireworks did not take place at 100% in the previous years due to the financial crisis in the country, Fernando said.
"There is a shortage of several fireworks, such as whistling rockets and whistling spinners, in the local market. The price of the ingredients for the making of fireworks has decreased by 30 percent this year when compared with previous years," he said.
Accordingly, the fireworks price in the local market shows a lower budget, Fernando said.

A country full of citizens who blindly went along with the over spending glamour has to suffer. Even as we speak the balance of payment issue, the inadequate competitive exports, slightly overrated tourist income, a total failure on social welfare schemes to reduce poverty under various names Sahal potha (1970) to Janasaviya (1990) to Samurdhi (2000) and now Aswesuma 2024 we are failing at a policy level and end outcome level. So not having a few fireworks should not be a thing to be sad about at least for 2 more years.\

The QUALITY OF THE FIREWORKS should not be compromised. People should be advised about the danger of poor quality and therefore, it should be handled accordingly.

Today we are a bankrupt country can the public afford to expend on fireworks when a majority of the population are unable to have three nutritional meals a day. We should scrap burning of money on these unnecessary fireworks irrespective of any festival but use these funds judiciously to fill hungry stomachs!!!!!!!!!

It is mostly those who have ‘hungry stomach’ and no ‘3 square meals’ who go around lighting fireworks! And that too in public areas because they don’t have proper compounds to do so!

I hate these things .They're bad for the environment ,causing a fog of smoke.Plus it endangers all wildlife .The senseless and repetitive nature of bang bang bang bang ,is a pain for everyone.Surely there are other ways of celebrating other than waking up the whole neighborhood

My parents used to say buying fireworks is the same as burning money. I agree.
