Colombo, Dec. 9 (Daily Mirror) - The islandwide power blackout is due to multiple lightning strikes on several transformers and power stations, a Power and Energy Ministry official said.

Meanwhile, the Power and Energy Ministry said the islandwide power blackout is also due to a breakdown in the transmission line from Kotmale to Biyagama.

They said the power restoration process is expected to be completed within two hours.

In addition a Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) confirmed the blackout is due to multiple lightning strikes on several transformers and hydropower stations.

The widespread power failure occurred at around 5 p.m. today.

Utter bullshit. Each and every main generation point and sub stations have lightning and surge protection installed. Impossible for multiple locations to fail at the same time, maybe one location but not whole country. Did the same lightning that hit Matara power station also hit Jaffna power station at the same second. This is called professional bullshit. This is sheer negligence, it also shows free education in manufacturing incompetent engineers needs to stop.

Multiple lightning is an excuse. It's shame for the uneducated state minster Indika to come and say this. He can go and tell this to the parliament. All the substations have lightning protection system. Multiple lightning is common in SriLanka. Ranil may arrange a committee to study this.

Were these natural lightning strikes or lightning strikes by employees? Probability of several lightning strikes occurring in many places within a few moments of each other and targeting only the CEB is very remote. Whatever they were, this does no augur well and we are in for very difficult times.

Unbelievable! Spending billions of money to maintain a huge system and a large workforce including engineers with high salaries and benefits, this inefficient and ineffective organisation cannot deal with lightening, which is a basic day to day occurrence. It's the corrupt, vision-less and unskilled leadership and technical engineers who are at fault not the institution called CEB, which is a national asset. The corrupt politicians want to defame CEB and cause anger about CEB and make background to go for a corrupt deal to sell it. Corruption and bad governance are behind the scene.
