A two-story house in Buwelikada, Kandy, reportedly belonging to a relative of cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara, was gutted by flames.

Fire fighting teams from the Kandy Municipal Council rushed to the scene on Thursday (2) night after receiving reports from nearby residents.

However, no one was present in the house when the fire had broken out, but significant damage has been caused.

The Kandy Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Kumar Sangakkara is currently in India, coaching the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

    Who cares?

    Concerned Saturday, 04 May 2024 11:10 AM

Exactly who care and is this of any importance to the public.

Insurance will compensate Kumar Sangakkara's relative.

Here's my list of suspects in case arson is suspected: 1. RR fans angered by the loss to SRH. 2. MI fans hoping to emerge from the bottom of the table by upsetting RR coach. 2. Aragalaya types testing their skills since its been almost two years since they last set fire to anything. Fortunately, no one is injured and hopefully property damage is not heavy.

A small point of order Saturday, 04 May 2024 10:47 AM

With the emphasis given to Kumar's connection and ending the note by saying he is in India for a moment I was wondering whether he would have been a suspect if he was in Sri Lanka. The emphasis should have been on the actual victims of this damage not on their loved, respected and legendary relative.

    Well Said !

A brilliant point . I also thought so. The issue is lack of good communication skills. May be what happened was that someone in the neibourhood told a reporter that the house belonged to Kumar's relative , then the emphasis is on Kumar not the the fire.

Kumar is such a gentleman only where the money is. He has made billions thisway. So this is nothing. Dont waste the space in this paper

So are you jealous? Wonder where you would have been if you had that level of fame. It is easy to be critical of others until you are put into their situation.

Tissa Fernando Sunday, 05 May 2024 07:27 AM

Kumar is a talented sportsman , when he played for the country, he brought fame. With his own skills he has earned the respect of many and so there is nothing wrong in earning money by coaching. He does not waste his time in speaking in political rallies. Guppi has to think broadly .

    wsw Sunday, 05 May 2024 08:29 AM

Well, he has worked hard, earned his money legally, so why worry? Leave him alone, just focus on developing yourself.

    Joe Saturday, 04 May 2024 11:25 AM

Does the government want to sort that out too?. What ever it is not nice, ney, sin noh, Kumar and all

No worries for the owners Saturday, 04 May 2024 11:51 AM

Old house, insured for a large amount of money. What else is there?

    Ylg Saturday, 04 May 2024 02:30 PM

But that accent??!! Suppose that great cricketer he was the accent doesn't matter.

Maheepala Prof Saturday, 04 May 2024 04:00 PM

Why to give significant to a relative or a friend of a famous personality. If it has happened to Kumar, we understand the importance. Where are we going to stop ?

    kumar Saturday, 04 May 2024 07:27 PM

This is a typical style of Sri Lankan news reporting . Regardless of whether the landowner is related to Sangakkara or not, he is still a human being. The primary motivation for this kind of news pieces is jealousy. As long as it's done honestly and within the law, everyone has the right to make money. There is no way to solve that with jealousy.

Who cares about this fellow and what is the relevance to the people. There are many dying due to drugs, lack of medicine, lack of foods and due to many malpractices. Those are the most important news that deserve publicity and awareness.

Tissa Fernando Sunday, 05 May 2024 06:21 PM

People care about Kumar who brought fame to the country and did good positive things for the country. His high end restaurant earns huge money from foreigners. His coaching brings dollars to the country. He is invited to make public speeches too. So , may be no body cares about Manik but people do care when they hear anything about Kumar.

    So what?

Point at Alutha.... Point at Alutha .... Sunday, 05 May 2024 01:51 PM

Not lying, please investigate - this is the work of Mahinananda Aluthgamage (SLPP) he had started his rowdy approach now itself. Hopefully, he will lose his strength very soon with our attacks.

Why this becomes a national news item? Is'nt that funny? YEH - ABSOLUTELY!!

Mohamed Burhan Sunday, 05 May 2024 09:09 PM

Mr.Sangakkara we believe and assume you belong to the category of "Sir"titles of English cricket. We cannot see you as a helping contribution in what ever possible way to Sri Lanka cricket afterall Cricket Board groomed as an match winning player and captain. looks you are extremely busy in U.K.

Kumar Sangakkara was a great cricketer coming from Kandy. Studied at the Best school of all Trinity College.
