A gazette notification to legalise the cultivation of cannabis as a medicinal herb will be issued in the near future, State Minister of Indigenous Medicine Sisira Jayakody said today.

He told Parliament that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has made a budget proposal to grant approval to cultivate cannabis as a medicinal herb.

Speaking during the debate on the Ayurveda (Amendment) Bill, the Minister said India has announced that they were planning to ban the export of Ayurvedic herbs as raw materials after 2027 and that this would be a threat to the Indigenous and Ayurveda practices in Sri Lanka.

“India is planning to export medicinal herbs only as medicines. They are going to ban the export of medicinal herbs as raw material. This will put our Indigenous and Ayurveda practices in crisis as we don’t cultivate medicinal herbs as commercial crops,” State Minister Jayakody said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

ISRAEL has a successful export business for medicinal cannabis. Hong Kong developed using the Opium business revenues as well. Thanamalwila can be the next export processing zone. however if we don't have a good disciplined police force and other deterents the good intentions and good use of cannabis will be lost to the nation.

Cannabis cultivation is a good move, it is approved in many countries, few grams could be purchased by the public as well and it brings foreign exchange to the dollar starved country. We must do everything possible to bring dollars to the country.

Majority of people in the western world use cannabis for recreation on daily basis. If you walk along the streets you will smell cannabis smoke all the time. As Sri Lankan youth are consuming heroin now, there is no point in not allowing cannabis even for recreational use.

This is a brilliant idea! This plant is indigenous to Sri Lanka and successfully used for millennia before being banned by colonial rulers. About time it became a forex earning cash crop for our farmers and country. There's much false information put out by the global pharma mafia ostracising its use for many ailments in the modern world.
