Cargills goons. I have decided not to patronise these fellows. Others too should do it. We cannot expect any justice

    Chryshan Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:24 PM

Cargills Management should change the policy of humiliating

    Gb Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:31 PM

Assault is a worse crime than theft, in most civilized countries yoy cannot attack someone for stealing (unless self defence), how do sri lankans think its OK to beat someone close to death ( not referring to this case but others) just for stealing food to feed their starving families, I have no respect for backwards thinking people, country is doomed.. doomed...

    Nimal Saturday, 23 September 2023 10:35 PM

That's it. We have had enough of Cargills, a far cry from what it was half a century ago. I live in the deep south and I and my wife were regular customers at Cargills, but not any longer.

    Management RESIGN.

Rip Winkle Saturday, 23 September 2023 11:59 PM

Vast majority of Sri Lankans are frustrated by the ever rising cost of living while wages remain unchanged. They are ready to lash out at one another at the slightest provocation or opportunity. They've been screwed left, right and centre by their own leaders since independence.

As a nation we have lost all respect for humanity, no compassion or empathy. People take the law into their own hands when the real arm of the law comprises of all yes men.

    George Sunday, 24 September 2023 02:11 AM

    This is why expatriates

    Gabriella Sunday, 24 September 2023 02:47 AM

Yes, let people shoplift and thieve for whatever reason. Do nothing, and it only emboldens the thief. Also, the consumer (us), pay more to subsidise the retailers losses. I admire, and say well done to all those employees who cared about their company (Cargills) to act in its best interests. It is disgraceful that the company failed to reciprocate that loyalty.

If she's accused for stealing then there's few ways to address the issue!! However, Vigilante justice NOT acceptable at all, Period.

Smart lawyers Sunday, 24 September 2023 05:07 AM

Get no win no fee lawyers and sue the living daylight out of Cargills.

    Yoga Sunday, 24 September 2023 06:16 AM

Definitely Cargills and all other super markets take the matter very seriously. They need proper training including psychological training. Long ago a bad incident happened to me at Kandy outlet as they suspected me that I stealed something. So they took me to the store room, checked and couldn't find any. The feeling I got was can't explain here. If you go to Babalapitiya Marine drive outlet, a lady in side the outlet used to closely monitor most customers. So Cargills Definitely have some problems and I never going to visit Cargills anymore

    Grace Sunday, 24 September 2023 06:26 AM

I feel pity for the customer if she had stolen food stuff to feed her family. Our politicians children are studying in the advanced countries in the west, enjoying expensive meal many meals a day while many poor people's children are unable to continue their studies and can't eat even one meal a day. Thanks to those who ruled this country for 75 years.

Dulanjoli Premadosa Sunday, 24 September 2023 06:33 AM

Boycott Cargills, Don't shop at Cargills.

Dr. Amila Kankanamge Sunday, 24 September 2023 06:37 AM

DELETE Cargills from your shopping list. Cargills is SCUM.

    Banda Sunday, 24 September 2023 07:38 AM

The policies of the business outlets and laws of the land should be changed with immediate effects. Enough is enough. If politicians and goons above the law of the land, there won’t be any rule of law. No progress at all. There will be no development. No one want to live in such a country. No tourist want to visit such a criminal land. Arrest is not enough.

Shee Lankan Sunday, 24 September 2023 07:40 AM

Cannot blame Cargill's alone. It's the state of the country and it's people. The calibre of people, thuggery, intimidation and cruelty.

    Abd Sunday, 24 September 2023 07:57 AM

Keep away from Cargills, employees are brutes that good for acting in South Indian cinema

    Sakya Sunday, 24 September 2023 08:04 AM

I'm a long standing customer now I have a second thought. Supposedly The staff are trained only to greet with clasped hands nothing more. Sari clad supervisor is leading the assault others abetting including the males. Disgusting! Cargill's owes an apology for all the customers and avoid employing thugs for customer service

Dr Jehan Sheriffdeen Sunday, 24 September 2023 08:05 AM

This incident is highly degrading. If she was suspected of theft police should have been called for further assistance. How can they assault her like that and ripping her blouse off. She should ask for compensation from Cargills for at least 500 million Rupees. Since Cargills have issued a statement apologizing they will have to pay any amount decided by a court. I hope this female takes this all the way so no other person faces these degrading situations.

    Ranminda Sunday, 24 September 2023 08:27 AM

This is an obvious criminal act against a customer who visited Cargills Food City in Borella. A good lawyer should appear to defend the rights of the woman assaulted brutally by the Cargills Staff. The video tells the complete story to convince any judge in the country. The charges leveled against must include 1) Assault and Battery, 2) Confinement, 3) Verbal abuse 4) Causing mental agony 4) Defamation Cargills management is liable for all charges and causing irrevocable damage to the woman physically and psychologically that cannot be measured and healed forever.

Be Fair Sunday, 24 September 2023 09:10 AM

Funny, now anyone can walk in, shop lift walk out...!! Who will stop you.

Brutality and assult is wrong by Cargil the thug shop Sunday, 24 September 2023 01:17 PM

@Be Fair, what mad talk is that. You want to try that here, or dare to try it even in the most free western democracy?

    Percy Sunday, 24 September 2023 01:30 PM

It's happening in the great USA, check and see.

    Krishna Sunday, 24 September 2023 09:16 AM

Let us boycott, let them face the consequences

    Lesterr Sunday, 24 September 2023 09:37 AM

Well done. This is how thieves should be punished.

Martin Silva Sunday, 24 September 2023 10:12 AM

The staff of Cargills should have let it be robbed. That's the lesson SL politicians are teaching us since 1948

    Ah Sunday, 24 September 2023 10:13 AM

Dont allow anyone to take law in their hands. Punish first the customer if proved that she was involved in the theft. Then it is imperative the employees involved in the brutal assault of the customer; be it male or female, young or old and of any race be reprimanded severely and be jailed for at least a year with heavy fine. Management terminating those involved from services should not be used for them to get away scot free from punishment

wickrama wijayasiri Sunday, 24 September 2023 10:17 AM

This behaviour is not limited to Cargills. Remember the incident at House of Fashion last year. These security 'goons' are behaving as if they are a police force who could be the judge, jury, and the executioner. They have to be taught the law and the limits which they cannot go beyond!

    ANTON Sunday, 24 September 2023 10:49 AM

FORTUNATELY THE ASSAULT WAS FREE OF CHARGE.

Cargills Customer Sunday, 24 September 2023 11:15 AM

Some interested parties seem to be making a Mountain out of a Molehill.

Trehan Munasinghe Sunday, 24 September 2023 11:25 AM

This supermarket chain needs to issue a public apology as it is very likely that people will boycott this place. The police under the law of the land needs to file charges on those involved in the assault (irrespective of there being a complaint) the victim also should be arrested for alleged shoplifting. If this lady gets a good lawyer she can sue this establishment for damages and injuries caused to her.

Kumaran, wattala Sunday, 24 September 2023 11:28 AM

Only statement from the management not sufficient. The accused should be punished and the victim should be compensated.

    Cheers Sunday, 24 September 2023 11:42 AM

    Shame on you Cargils

    royden Sunday, 24 September 2023 11:45 AM

The Best thing stop going to any Cargill outlets

Banda Iya Sunday, 24 September 2023 12:58 PM

This is a fault of Cargills management. I checked with a few staff working in Cargills group if they received orientation on work ethics, behaviour towards customers etc. Their answers we No. Even a small fire breaks out, they don't know how to respond. The fire extinguishers desplayed are only for a formality. I have visited super markets in the Western countries where staff are very polite, Courteous and equipped with necessary knowledge.

Kasun for the truth Sunday, 24 September 2023 01:13 PM

Our people who have stealing mindset from birth are so sympathised with the thief. That mind set is not only seen in politicians, but among most Srilankans who pity this thief also. If that thief attacked with a weapon or invited outside group of her thugs to come in would you open the entrance to let that happen. Thief mindset supports thieves.

human Being Sunday, 24 September 2023 02:13 PM

@Be fair : You have the alarm if anyone shop lift, they cannot leave just like that, they got security, do not bring lame excuses in this, what they did to her is totally wrong.

Local food chains sucks Sunday, 24 September 2023 03:27 PM

I heard that Yahapalana government tried to bring in International Food chain to Sri Lanka to make our local food chains more competitive and to teach them how to run a food chain properly. They even offered to sell our local fish to the chain. They were afraid to do that thinking it would affect their brand, but they finally agreed. Unfortunately, some local food chains got the news and made people protest, and after that government gave up.

Moh Sleiman Monday, 25 September 2023 05:58 AM

RANJITH PAGE what are going to do about this disgusting behaviour of your staff? Please dont let your reputation go down the drain with these uncivilized scoundrals. You can imagine the plight of these poor people for stealing to have a meal,I CONDONE this behaviour, but please give some to the poor.

Karalasingam Sivalingam Monday, 25 September 2023 01:12 PM

Were they produced in court, what was the prosecution's charges, why not produce the victim too, what was her version? Public would like to know the conclusion of this case
