Colombo, Nov. 11 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that the government is boasting of an overflowing treasury, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said today that anyone, even a Montessori kid can fill the Treasury by overly taxing the people.

He told Parliament that the government has overly taxed the people and collected over Rs. 287 billion as state revenue exceeding the revenue target of 15 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He said according to the IMF condition, revenue target for 2025 is 15 per cent of the GDP and said however, the government has recorded a state revenue of 15.9 percent of the GDP.

The Opposition Leader also said the government has recorded a 3.8 per cent primary balance exceeding the IMF target of 2.3 per cent.

The Government has increased direct and indirect taxes and recorded a surplus of Rs. 479 billion in primary balance which is a surplus of 1.5 percent than the IMF target of 2.3 percent.

He said the government must utilise this surplus for the benefit of the people by reducing the direct and indirect taxes and poverty elimination programmes.
