Cyclone threat looms as Bay of Bengal system intensifies

The low-pressure area currently located over the southeast Bay of Bengal, to the northeast of Sri Lanka, is expected to intensify further and move west-northwestward, the Department of Meteorology said today.

As of 5.00 p.m. on October 24, 2025, the system was positioned about 1,050 kilometres east of Batticaloa.

According to forecasts, the low-pressure area is likely to develop into a depression on October 25, a deep depression on October 26, and eventually intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27.

The Met Department has warned naval and fishing communities not to venture into the sea areas bounded by 05N–18N and 80E–95E until further notice due to the potential threat from strong winds and rough seas.

Fishermen and naval personnel already operating in these regions have been advised to move away from the affected areas before October 25.

Wind speeds in these sea areas are expected to increase to 55–65 kmph at times, accompanied by heavy thundershowers, making the sea rough to very rough.

The Department has also urged naval and fishing communities engaged in activities over the shallow sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions.
