Colombo, Dec 27 (Daily Mirror) - The chief custodian of the Kataragama Devalaya, Somipala T. Ratnayake, the main suspect in the disappearance of a gold tray made out of 38 gold sovereigns, which was donated to the Kataragama Devalaya by a devotee, was arrested, Police said.

He was arrested after he surrendered to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) this morning.

They said a three-hour-long statement was recorded from the suspect over the incident.

The Colombo Crimes Division recently arrested a lay custodian of the Kataragama Devale, known as ‘Chooti Kapuwa,’ over a missing gold tray and later was released on bail.

Why do people donate gold to temples? Do they think the God will give them a good place? Idiots. He/she could have helped the poor and the handicapped. There are number of war widows without proper houses to live. Children with one parent struggling to go to school and live. Just maintain the temples . No need of gold necklaces to the statues.

Of course the proper god gives great blessing. Giving to poor is foolish. Give to deyyo and ask for poor to benefit, and maybe government give the massive taxes they collect to poor thanks to deyyo. Utter stupid to give to handicapper as deyyo does not benefit who do stupid things.

Undoubtedly the Descent was Astronomic, since 2004, with the advent to “Power of the Family”!!!??? None feels the SHAME of 'Thieving, Robbing or Looting'!? Seems Sacred Temple Guardians are susceptible!!!??? “THE WAY OF LIFE”!!!???

Chief Kapuwa should also be arrested for keeping proceeds of crime (donated by drug dealer)

    Devotee Thursday, 28 December 2023 09:27 AM

Disrespectful to say devotees to give are drug dealers. Many small businessman give money, as well as big businessman giver greater. Making money through selling products and services public want is not the same as illegal activity. Even farmer sell their produce for money, and they give to temples or devalaya for blessings.

No individual should ever be appointed to be the custodian of any places of worship. Either they should be run by the government or a committee of individuals who are not permanent but serving on fixed term basis. For those believers who go to pray to their Gods in these places, the fact those places being owned by private individuals is very demeaning and insulting even if they are not conscious of it.

The Chief Custodiam must have followed his local representative/s in Parliament. I do not think that to be an offence!!

Really, you think this is a first time. He will be back soon.

Why do you offer gold or any valuables to gods anyway. It is a useless exercise. Only your hard work will bring you success, not believing in scientifically unproven believes and superstitions. A good lesson for the devotee too. A typical SL stupidity.

    Premkumar Wednesday, 27 December 2023 02:37 PM

At least now even those devotees who were donating valuables to the religious places, must realise whats happening to their donations. Please refrain from these mythical beliefs, if you got surplus money please please donate it to the hospitals desperately needed funding.

The crooks may never be caught. The thousands the devotees give in poojas, most disappears into the pockets of the custodians. Hopefully devotee get benefit of the giving, even if most of the giving is stolen by the Kapuwas.

What fools to donate to temple . Better to use that money to uplift poor . Sri Lankans born suckers

    Devotee Thursday, 28 December 2023 09:25 AM

Giving to deyyo gives great satisfaction. Giving to demanding beggar or paying tax to government is sucks life out of giver. All around the world, devotee give to their own god to get person blessing. Nothing different here.

We go to church, temple, kovil or mosque to pray, why do we need a mediator called Kappurala, what is his qualification to be a kapurala, is it a family hegemony, passed over to in one family from ancestors confined to one family, if so, I call it hypocrisy, in this scientific world following perennial convention s give room to abuse, corruption and theft.
