Colombo, Feb 6 (Daily Mirror) - While going against the circular issued by the Education Ministry, a school 'Keheliya Rambukwella Primary School' had been named in Kundasale in Kandy by the name of former Environment Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, and this name should be removed, Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) general secretary Joseph Stalin said.
Addressing the media, he said the Education Ministry had issued a circular in 1996 stating that a school cannot be named after a person who is still alive.
Even though Keheliya Rambukwella had been arrested and remanded over the controversial human immunoglobulin procurement scandal, it is not relavant to keep his name for the said school, he said.
Keheliya had set the wrong example to society, and he had been imprisoned. Therefore, it is not acceptable to name a school after him, he charged.
The CTU questioned the Education Ministry, as they still want to keep Keheliya's name for the school. Keeping a school name for those found guilty will not help provide an example to the school.
The same controversy had emerged when naming schools after 'Mahinda Rajapaksa'. Minister Bandula Gunawardana was the person who started naming those schools during the Rajapaksa regime, Stalin said.
"Therefore, the CTU demands the government to take immediate action against naming schools after persons who are still alive," he added.

Yes one should name the school with his name, as he was responsible for killing innocent persons

Any building institution built using public money must not be named after politicians or those who facilitated the project. If any one use his/her personal money and does any project such person can use his/her name

This is the reason why buildings such as schools and hospitals unless fully funded by individuals should NEVER be named after random politicians. For example, the airport, the stadium etc - unless of course, these leaders/politicians after which buildings have been named, have contributed positively towards the development and enhancement of our citizens. The power trip and ego of politicians in our country is sickening and quite disgusting.

In developed countries, there is an unwritten rule that a public property is only named in memory of key public figure after passing away. By the time this decision is made, publican submit their views. In Sri Lanka every Dicks and Harrys can themselves nominate their names to engrave on plaques. Tribalism at the best.

If you want to go down that road, perhaps the word teacher should be also changed to something else like education worker. Teaching is a vocation, not a job that one does for a salary. But our unionized education workers are similar to the port labourers when it comes to striking as a trade union action.

What nonsense is this ? Building schools using public funds and naming them after corrupt politicians ? Those things only happen in godforsaken lawless bankrupt country called Sri Lanka.

It should be illegal for a living politician to name any buildings on their own by and all should be removed as a good practice from all roads, airports, School by, etc

Naming this hallowed institution after a crooked politician is an insult to that institution.
