Colombo, Jan. 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has issued a circular cancelling the leave of all employees of the board effective today till further notice.

The circular was issued by CEB Acting General Manager Engineer (Dr) Narendra de Silva today.

The decision was taken according to the provisions of the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2363/02 published on December 18, 2023, making all services connected to the electricity supply ad essential public services by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

However, the employees can obtain leave in case of urgent matters with the approval of an executive officer attached to the respective divisions or branches.

Moreover, the CEB Workers’ Union announced that they have planned to launch a three-day trade union action starting today, urging the Power and Energy Minister to withdraw the bill to restructure the CEB

Are these unions mad? This institution is loss making and has so much in salary costs, but no service to public. What the union should do is to protest against politicians putting their cronies into CEB. Then again, these union members must be full of such cronies. Will SL ever get out its mess created by corrupt politicians and public servants?

For the unions that live on the subscriptions from its members, will oppose the restructuring of the CEB. That should not stop the government from going ahead with the plans to make the CEB a profitable entity.

Idiotic comment. Heads have been changed so many times. The only way to change this is to privatise it so they are answerable to shareholders rather than the Govt and political cronies. These CEB employees know, no matter how much they rob, the Govt will always come for the rescue.

The CEB must be held accountable. They just cannot pass their costs to the consumer by way of higher tariffs. they must show cost cutting measures. The CEB is not the 'budalaya' of its staff or unions.
