734 inmates transfered to other prisons: Minister

Colombo, July 7 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 734 inmates, who were involved in the clash at the Negombo prison have been transfered to other prisons, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara said today.

He told Parliament that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has launched an investigation into the incident apart from the internal investigation launched by the Prisons Department.

The Minister said it has been found out that inmates had got hold of several weapons and that an investigation is underway to aseceratain whther they had broken into the armoury or snatched the weapons from the prison officials.

He said postmorten inquries are being condcuted to asertain whether the deaths have been caused due to shooting or assualts by the inmates.
