Colombo, Dec.31 (Daily Mirror) - selling prices of all types of mobile phones will be increased by 35 per cent from tomorrow with the imposement of the new VAT, the Mobile Phone Marketing and Sales Association (MPMSA) said.

The president of the association Sampath Senarath said the decision was taken due to the increase in VAT by 18 percent with effect from tomorrWith this price increase, there will be a decline of about 50 percent in the mobile phone market, he said.

Accordingly, from tomorrow, a mobile phone worth Rs. 100,000 will be sold at a price of Rs.135,000.

As we know VAT is indirect tax. VAT has been increased from 15% to 18%. However VAT increased by 3 %. We can not understand how they increased mobile phone price by 35%. The governments should be regulated price even mobile phone.

An 18% added on tax should send the price up only by 18%... and that for the importers who are not vat registered... the math does not seem to add up when you consider that for the next couple of months, they will be selling stock that was brought under the old rates... this is what you call price gouging

The figures make no sense whatsoever. After all, its an uneducated trade union leader making these statements. Best for CAA to raid all these shops and ensure they are not using the 3% VAT increase to charge 35% more for a mobile device.

Only math they need to know is how to make profit. They only want to sell phones, and if all of them act as mafia, public is lost yet again. Ending business associations is only way to improve prices. OPEC is cartel mafia, and see how much damage they do to world. The business associations here are just like those rascals.

There is no benefit to the public to pay more and more for mobile phones, and the Mobile Phone sales mafia were the ones who pushed the TRC to regulate about imported mobile phones. Public must not buy Mobile phone sales mafia sold phones, but protest by finding other means to get phones.

This may not be correct with the new VAT system. Definitely there will be increase , however these traders are trying to desive the custermers by various statements. Finance minister must look in to this issue seriously.

Everyone should ask a VAT INVOICE when buying a mobile phone. If they FAIL to give a VAT INVOICE that means they are not registered for VAT or not paying TAX.

FYI!, Previously, the duty imposed on mobile phones were PAL-5% and SSL-2.5% only. However, now the mobile phones are applicable to a VAT component of 18%, which is a value added tax, IMO, 30% price hike would've been justifiable.
