Legal action has been taken by the Mount Lavinia Police Environmental Unit against 26 individuals for haphazard disposal of garbage.
A senior official of the Police Environmental Unit said they identified the suspects from CCTV recordings during investigations for the month. He said action was filed against them in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
Police said that the Karadiyana garbage recycling centre was not accepting mixed garbage and that it resulted in the haphazard disposal of garbage collected in houses.
They said individuals travelling by trishaws, motorcars and motorcycles had dropped off bags of garbage by roadside and that the police had received a series of public complaints in this regard.
A police team under OIC Police Environmental Unit SI Sanjeewa Silva is conducting investigations on the instructions of SSP Kamal Pushpakumara.
