While endorsing Minister Sajith Premadasa as the presidential candidate, the UNP Working Committee passed a resolution to take forward the constitutional reform process that was initiated during the term of the present government.
The resolution also said it would proceed with the process of advancing power devolution, evolving electoral reforms and scrapping the executive presidency.
The resolution will be ratified at the party’s convention on October 3.
There will be three resolutions to be put for ratification at the convention. One is to approve the unanimous endorsement of Mr. Premadasa as the candidate and the other to carry forward the constitution-making process.
The third one is to recognize the role played by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to uphold democracy during the 52-day petit government last year. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
