A special operation will be launched from today to identify vehicles for illegal parking as well as for parking on pavements, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said police will tow away such vehicles including motorcycles that are parked on pavements or blocking roads.
DIG Rohana said the motorist will have to pay towing charges.
“Legal action will be taken against illegal parking in which a person could be fined Rs.50,000 or imprisoned after being produced in courts,” he said. He said traffic accidents were reported mostly due to unauthorised parking and added this practice also caused inconvenience to the public.
