Amid a simmering crisis within the United National Party (UNP) over its presidential candidate, the leaders of parties allied to the UNP met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday and discussed amendments to the constitution of the proposed alliance as suggested by the dissidents.
The Prime Minister is reported to have requested for a report taking into account the amendments that can be incorporated into the constitution.
The UNP dissident group which is loyal to Deputy Leader, Minister Sajith Premadasa proposed that the presidential candidate be nominated before the formation of any alliance and that the UNP should be the dominant force in the proposed alliance.
