Second wave COVID-19 cases in WP exceed 30,000; 18,000 cases in Colombo

The number of COVID-19 cases reported from the Western Province in the second wave of COVID-19 since October 4 has exceeded 30,000, the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak said. 

Accordingly, a total of 30,431 cases reported in the Western Province and among them, majority of 17,977 cases reported in the Colombo District as of Wednesday. 


The centre said that 9,095 cases were reported from the Gampaha District and 3,359 from the Kalutara District. The number of reported cases from the Central Province is 2,105. 


A total of 1,234 cases have been reported from the Sabaragamuwa Province. 


In addition, the number of Covid cases reported in the Southern and North Western Provinces has exceeded 1,000.  A total of 460 more persons were confirmed positive to COVID-19 on Tuesday. Four of them are Sri Lankan expatriates and three were tourists visiting Sri Lanka. 


Other 453 are locally-identified ones, including the majority 249 from Colombo, 38 from Kandy District, 52 from Gampaha District and other 114 are from different districts. 


By yesterday morning (30), the total number of COVID-19 positive cases reported from Minuwangoda and Peliyagoda clusters stands at 38,321.  A total of 42,063 persons have been confirmed positive to COVID-19 from all over the country, including the deceased.  34,622 fully-recovered COVID-19 patients have been so far discharged from hospitals and the rest 7,245 are still under treatment in hospitals and care centres as 698 recovered patients have left hospitals yesterday. 


More than 5,000 persons in 75 tri service-managed QCs are still in quarantine. 


Meanwhile, the isolation status in Kosgama had been lifted yesterday. In addition, seven more police areas in Colombo and Ruwanwella police area in Kegalle District and several Grama Niladhari Division across the country are still under isolation. Thalduwa housing scheme in Gampaha is also under isolation.
