A gazette notification has been issued by Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera banning the use of Sachet packets, inflatable toys, plastic cotton buds with effect from March 03, 2021
The Extraordinary Gazette in this regard was issued on January 21, under the Section 23W (1) (a) of the National Environmental Act, No. 47 of 1980. According to the Gazette, the use of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material for packing agrochemicals for any process, trade or industry, will come under the ban.
The following plastic items have been banned by the gazette: - Sachets less than or equal to a net volume of 20ml/ net weight of 20g will be banned. (except for packing food and medicines) - Inflatable toys are also to be banned. - Cotton buds with plastic stems will also come under the ban.
