The acute depression over South-West Bay of Bengal lay centred at (10.0N, 83.3E) to the North-East of the Trincomalee coast about 280 km is likely to intensify into a severe Cyclonic Storm, the Met. Department said yesterday.
It is expected to move North-Westwards and cross the Tamil-Nadu coast during next 48 hours.
As a result, heavy rains exceeding 100 mm and strong gusty winds (60-70) kmph was expected in the Eastern, Northern and North-Central Provinces. Strong gusty winds (40-50) kmph could be expected in other parts of the country. Cloudy skies could be expected over the Northern, North-Central and North- Western Provinces and in the Trincomalee District. Showers or thunder showers will occur at times in Northern and North-Central Provinces and in theTrincomalee District.
Heavy rain falls above 100 mm are likely at certain places. Several spells of showers will occur in the Western, North-Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by strong winds.
