A crocodile and her 12 hatchlings which had been trapped in an agricultural well for several months in Kurundupitiya, Vavuniya were rescued by a group of youth and released to a safe area on Saturday (19).
The people in this area said that a crocodile and several hatchlings had been in this well for many months. The youngsters had used a backhoe to rescue this crocodile family.
Villagers revealed that the mother crocodile that lived in a nearby tank had fallen into this unprotected well while it was going in search of food. She had laid eggs inside the well, which had hatched.
The mother crocodile is said to be eight feet long and was a kind of marsh crocodile. The hatchlings had been released to a water logged area.
