Statistics released by the Attorney General’s Department indicate that the Department had, up to July this year, concluded 7,503 criminal cases including 4,782 indictments in the High Court.
This is an unprecedented achievement when compared with previous years. The AG’s Department told Daily Mirror that its officers were working tirelessly to conclude all pending cases by the end of this year.
AG Dappula De Livera PC is reported to have instructed the officials to concentrate on finishing the pending cases as soon as possible adhering to the law and a productive mechanism. According to the statistics, there were 2,901 indictments and 1,881 indictments filed in child abuse cases this year while the AG had given his opinion in 1,570 cases conducted by the Police and other institutions in criminal matters at the magisterial inquiry stage.
Meanwhile 3,717 cases were concluded last year and 3,102 in 2017.
