Companies which are committed to social service in the country are limited where many of them are merely cantered on profit making. The House of Maliban is a leading company in Sri Lanka which has shouldered its responsibility towards the society. Maliban which brings the best milk powder variety to the Sri Lankan market is also engaged in improving the life of the people in a different aspect.
The Maliban milk villages set up in Payagala, Kanduboda and Buluthsinghala areas in the Kaluthara District do stand as prime examples for the livelihood development initiatives of Maliban. Those villages have been set up under the Maliban Milk Abhaya Daanaya project.
For a long time Maliban has been engaged in rescuing milk cows condemned to being slaughtered. The rescued cows are handed over to the selected families to take care throughout the life. Accordingly, low-income families will be able make an income out of the cows they are provided, selling the milk.
The farmers have also been able to produce compost using the cow dung. Anyone who visits the Maliban milk village would see the way the farmers have grown the vegetables and fruits using the compost they had produced. The farmers state that the project of Maliban helped to improve the life of them. More than 1000 families have benefited by the programme.
