National Policy State Minister calls for greater engagement between SL and Japan

State Minister National Policy and Economic Affairs Niroshan Perera has called for greater engagement between Sri Lanka and Japan in a manner that would allow both nations to reap benefits of each other’s strengths.
Highlighting Sri Lanka’s strategic location, the state minister urged Japanese entities to use Sri Lanka as a base to increase their trading activities to the South Asian region.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that Sri Lanka is yet to fully explore the Japanese markets, and stressed it is imperative for local entities to be competitive by offering diversified high value products. Speaking at the ceremonial opening of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU) in Colombo on Thursday, Perera emphasized Sri Lanka must expand its current export range to that country and look to introduce new products, such as Ceylon tea.

“Sri Lanka has to graduate from traditional export sectors. High value exports, FDI and modern technologies are essential to achieve this objective. Historically Japan has been a key contributor to our nation and we look forward to innovative and cost-effective funding,” Perera said, while drawing attention to the government’s expectation of achieving high economic growth.

Japan has been a key partner in Sri Lanka’s infrastructure development. It is Sri Lanka’s second largest aid donor having funded various projects from road development to water supply systems.
