In today’s fast changing world that is mainly driven by technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or ‘things’ embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and other connected devices.
Things, in the IoT, can refer to a wide variety of devices such as heart monitoring implants, biochip transponders on farm animals, electric clams in coastal waters, automobiles with built-in sensors, electrical grid systems that help consumers to track energy consumption or field operation devices that assist fire-fighters in search and rescue. These devices collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and then autonomously flow the data between other devices.
Have you ever imagined how much you’re spending on electricity in your home or at your office or your company? Imagine if you could see how much you’re using and spending on energy on each equipment online and in your home, at your office or your company.
In the context of IoT and with the objective of helping Sri Lankan electricity consumers to monitor their electricity consumption on a daily basis, contributing to a greener economy at an affordable energy bill, one of Sri Lanka’s pioneer in innovative energy-related technology, JLanka Technologies has come up with a Smart Meter.
“Smart meters are a new version of the meter that records your household or enterprise energy use,” Jlanka Technolgies Consultant for Research and Development Nalin Karunasinghe said.
He said that the new Smart Meters are ‘smart’ because they will provide information about the energy you use directly to you or your supplier, without anyone having to read the meter, which should mean no more estimated bills. They should also help people better understand their consumption and they will provide the platform for time of use and smart grid going forward.
Grid refers to our electrical power infrastructure and Smart in this context means, in addition to other things, Internet-savvy. The Smart Grid is the energy infrastructure combined with the power of the Internet. The Internet gives the energy infrastructure both communication and control capabilities. This in turn lets energy providers (utilities) manage their resources in a more productive and efficient way.
Karunasinghe pointed out that since the inception of electricity deregulation and market-driven pricing throughout the world, utilities have been looking for a means to match consumption with generation.
“Traditional electrical and gas meters only measure total consumption and so provide no information of when the energy was consumed at each metered site,” he said adding that Smart Meters provide a way of measuring this site-specific information, allowing price setting agencies to introduce different prices for consumption based on the time of day and the season.
Utility companies propose that from a consumer perspective, Smart Metering offers potential benefits to householders. These include, an end to estimated bills, which are a major source of complaints for many customers; a tool to help consumers better manage their energy use - stating that smart meters with a display outside their homes could provide up-to-date information on gas and electricity consumption and in doing so help people to manage their energy use and reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions. Electricity pricing usually peaks at certain predictable times of the day and the season. In particular, if generation is constrained, prices can rise if power from other jurisdictions or more costly generation is brought online.
According to Karunasinghe the experience of smart metering in other countries has shown potential savings in energy use. Consumers who can see that they can save energy and money, by using most of their electricity-depended devices on a more efficient and a cost-effective way, are more likely to do so with Smart Meters. The Smart Meters will also give us all more control over the energy we use. He said that JLanka has come forward with this first-ever totally Sri Lanka made Smart Meter, which is an IoT product that in turn helps the government’s vision on energy sector policy initiatives for the next decade.
He went onto say that Smart Meters along with Smart Grids will play a key part in our move towards a greener, low-carbon future, one that will enable us to enjoy greater energy security while reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.
The smart meter is just a small box of clever electronics tucked away in the home or your enterprise. And JLanka Smart Meters are very safe and it is IP65 certified. The Smart Meter introduced by JLanka will never affect the energy meter provided by the electricity provider get after installing and you do not need to get permission from your electricity provider.
JLanka Technologies is the No.1 solar provider in Sri Lanka with most number of solar installations generated over 3MW electricity.
