Government Minister and National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa, speaking to reporters a short while ago, claimed that a UN representative had bribed the police yesterday during the protest opposite the UN office in Colombo.
The Minister claimed that as a result of the bribe the police had assaulted the protestors yesterday injuring some of them.
However when contacted by Daily Mirror online police spokesman SP Priyashantha Jayakody said that if there are such claims then the NFF can go before the bribery commission and lodge a complaint against the said police officer.
Weerawansa meanwhile also warned that the NFF will launch a fast unto death with the support of protestors from around the island, if UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon fails to reconsider his move to appoint a three member panel on Sri Lanka. (Daily Mirror online)
"fast unto death" would be a very good option for the country to get rid of the morons!

We join Iran and Myanmar. Not only politically but also economically too.
Bluff Bluff Wednesday, 07 July 2010 05:41 AM
Wimal, You are a minister in this Government. The entire cabinet is held responsible for all your actions and what you utter. Prove beyond any doubt, if you can, the fact that the Police officers had been bribed by the UN Representative. Then the IGP can take action against both parties as per the law of this country.
Uragodage Wednesday, 07 July 2010 12:48 PM
Wimal and his party members are very good in accusing others for taking bribes like he did during the presidential election.Do not think that we are fools brother to believe all what you say.
Sri Minnal Wednesday, 07 July 2010 11:09 PM
How can he be a responsible minister?
K.T.H.Wijenayake Wednesday, 07 July 2010 05:45 AM
"Old habits die hard". We must not forget that Wimal was a born JVPer. Their ways of taking on opponents is different to that of the civilized people. They never can hold on to responsibility. Wijenayake
Shame on the government for allowing this protest.

Education is the key! Democracy works well when people are educated; that's why we got representatives likes Weerawansa, mervin & co in the parliament.
Regi Wednesday, 07 July 2010 06:11 AM
WImal doesn't have to worry to get islandwide support. All those people who were supposed to have voted for him to achieve high preferential votes in Colombo District are enough.
Rajapaksha Wednesday, 07 July 2010 06:14 AM
Ambassodor Dr. Palitha Kohona was one of the members of the UN Special Committee on Israeli Practices in the Occupied Territories.

Wimal no one is above the law. just because your a minister you can just walk in front of a Private building and protest the way you want...!!!...just imagine can a normal civilian walk to the parliament premises and protest the way he wants...?....I will salute the cops in this regard...!!!
suwimal Wednesday, 07 July 2010 06:23 AM
This problem could be solved constitutionally. Bring up a proposal to amend the constitution of UN so that secretary general will not have the power to appoint such panels. This is a solution, sri lanka style.
Ajantha Wednesday, 07 July 2010 09:19 AM
the People who came with Wimal don't know what the protest is for. They just came for liquor and packet of lunch.
bigsam Wednesday, 07 July 2010 06:28 AM
If this is the way to solve problems, isn't there an EU office the NFF can surround and continue to hallucinate that GSP+ would be reinstated?
Dee Wednesday, 07 July 2010 09:19 AM

Fareed Wednesday, 07 July 2010 11:23 AM
Mr. Rajapakse. Sri Lanka is the Chairman of the UN Israeli Practices Committee since 1968. Ambassador Palitha Kohona is the Chairman of the Committee.

Peaceful demontrations should continue against this pathetic attempt by UN, US and EU for appointing this commiitte without UN's proper approval from the memeber states. UN digs it own pit.
priyal Wednesday, 07 July 2010 08:01 AM
Do we need a UN office and the NGOS In our country. The west dont want a asian country to stand on there own some thing is going on behind the screen, now the asian countries should stick together, why same thing will happen to the other asian countries, look at afganistan, palistine and Iraq every day people are getting killed by west.and moon dosent want to send his team to these countries. why only Sri Lanka.
Priyangani Atapatthu Wednesday, 07 July 2010 11:52 AM
Government should do something about this fool.
Best option would be to let him starve unto death. One less problem for the country.
dilshan Wednesday, 07 July 2010 05:30 AM

What a disgrace our county ! now we now where this country is heading to , its so pathetic .
Dead or alive Wednesday, 07 July 2010 05:31 AM
I think its been said many times, but must be said again: either he is a moron or a political opportunist of the highest order. what he doesn't realise (and what the government doesn't seem to realise) is that such action is causing considerable damage to Sri Lankas' reputation. There were far better ways of handling this issue than resorting to harassment and intimidation .
Saradial Wednesday, 07 July 2010 05:32 AM
Angoda hospital should start a special ward for VVIP(?!) ASAP.
Munas Wednesday, 07 July 2010 12:01 PM

krish Wednesday, 07 July 2010 12:10 PM

Ranjith Suda Wednesday, 07 July 2010 05:37 AM
A minister making such a statement brings disgrace for the govt, are you saying under your govt police are been bribed by UN. You must resign as a minister. This is the difference between west and Asia.
