The Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha has decided not to remove garbage from the roadsides under its purview during the dengue eradication month which started on June 25, as the authorities had issued a circular prohibiting the transportation of garbage in state owned vehicles during this month.

Responding a question by Daily Mirror as to what the people should do with their garbage during that period, Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Thiyagaratna de Alwis said he could not offer any suggestions regarding this.

He said that the Pradeshiya Sabha would not engage in the disposal of garbage until the end of the dengue eradication month as he did not wish to be penalised for violating a government order.

He explained that all the vehicles used by the Pradeshiya Sabha for the removal of garbage belonged to the state and, consequently, he could not transport garbage in any of them during the dengue eradication month on account of the circular.

Garbage is seen strewn along almost all the roads and byroads in Wattala as the Pradeshiya Sabha has not removed any since June 25. (Vineetha M. Gamage)

Amid these dramas between the government and PS, not only Wattala but many areas have become living hells. Look at the drains run near Wattala Food city, Alwis town and Averiwatta roads. There will be more dengue cases in the future.

Why not use Thiyagaratna De Alwis's state provided car to dispose of the waste as it was baught by our tax money. If he cannot give a solution, use his car.

why people dump garbage on road side in the first place, people should be educated gradually on better habbits. This should be started from school at least now.

Trehan Munasinghe Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:10 AM

Burn your own garbage... That what we do..I live in Wattala its better to burn it than wait for the Govt. or these PS idiots to come collect it...

wattala resident Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:16 AM

Who should be prosecuted when there are dengue deaths due to such gullible practices? Why do we pay rates and why did v ever vote for such cronies who dont care about the well being of the general public????

I presume the State has no money to buy chemicals, insecticide to destroy dengu mosquitoes, rodents etc for the communitiesat large. But they have money to buy luxury cars and go to foreign countries with the Tax payers money. Also the govt has imposed fines on the poor people with the excuse of breeding mosquitoes.

There is no proper place to dump in a Residential city of wattala. How many houses? and how many place for dumping? needs to rethink. every 100 odd houses must have a place to dump then there wont be any issue na

PS chairman: rent tractors if you have to. The tax you collect from the people of your area has to be used for the benefit of the people. Not for your personal well being.
