The government has decided to evict thousands of shanty dwellers in Colombo as a move to grab their valuable lands to be given to leading Chinese companies for huge commissions, the UNP said today.
Addressing a press conference, UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera said that Sri Lanka is increasingly under China’s clout today.
“The Rajapaksas can never gain control of the Colombo Municipal Council in a democratic election. Therefore, they try to deprive people of their right to exercise their franchise, through the plans to convert the Council to an authority. Plans are in place to relocate thousands of families to the areas outside Colombo. These people have lived in these municipal areas for 60 to 80 years. I cite this as a land grabbing exercise done in collaboration with certain multi-national Chinese companies,” he said.
Asked whether he had proof in this respect, he replied, “I do not have documentary proof. Yet, we have received reliable information.”
Evicting shanty-dwellers from prime land is a necessity in the process of development. This cannot be avoided but it is important to house these people elsewhere, which is actually taking place. This bankrupt UNP politician is just criticizing everything is sight.

Nilantha Friday, 15 October 2010 07:07 AM
If this is true, its is a very good move. Shanty ares occupied majority of Colombo valuable lands and it's not the optimal way of utilize landa in an island.
Faqi Friday, 15 October 2010 07:11 AM
If we are to progress the City of Colombo should be cleared of all slum dwellers. They could be housed in the outer areas. The land within Colombo is very valuable for development as a modern city.
Ajith Friday, 15 October 2010 07:11 AM

The UNP should not oppose merely for the sake of getting some votes. From where did the shanty dwellers come? Does the UNP want Colombo to be permanently a slum city?
MK Thursday, 14 October 2010 04:32 PM
and Mangala is under NGO's clout
EKSAAR Thursday, 14 October 2010 04:41 PM
UNP better stay away from making such statements.. Do those sandy dwellers really benefiting by the value of land? Is it Healthier to live? Will Mangala live there? Better Govt take over these lands and Give bigger lands with a good house in Suburb..
TDDC Thursday, 14 October 2010 04:50 PM
Mr. Samaraweera, the Colombo city should be developed to become a modern city and it should not be an another Calcutta. So that the Slums should be removed and relocated to suitable periphery. Please note that most elite Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims in Colombo city has been not voted for Government and in future also that position would remain unchanged. However it is my opinion also the slums should be removed and the relocation cost should be recovered by selling the valuable land they occupied. This is a World Bank recommended model of urban development. Nothing new. Please don`t mix politics and city development.
Ranjith Thursday, 14 October 2010 05:12 PM

Any way,China is not a country to be clouted by.
Thomas Friday, 15 October 2010 04:19 AM
The Chinese are Boss. We must prostrate before them and open our asses for the Chinese to put their tools in. But all this pro-China nonsense will stop once Chinese stop giving us aid. We are like beggars. We run and praise whoever gives us money. But we curse the same once they stop giving us free rice. The world knows that sinhalese are on average the most ungrateful vindictive primitive race on this planet.
Kamiss Friday, 15 October 2010 04:24 AM
Removing slums is good for health, environment and economy of the country, but it should be done without causing havoc to daily livelihoods of the occupants.
