The police today reportedly arrested the son of a leading UNP Parliamentarian after he assaulted a police officer at the Colpetty junction this morning.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said that a car had crashed into road construction site in Colpetty junction this morning. Traffic police officers and army personnel in the vicinity had rescued the driver in the vehicle.

After the person was rescued several others had arrived in a jeep to the crash site and tried to assault the driver of the car, when the police intervened and tried to stop the assault one of the assailants had reportedly threaten the police stating that he was the son of a leading UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella and then started assaulting the police officer.

The wounded police officer has been admitted to the Colombo General hospital.
The police have arrested the suspect and forwarded him to the judicial medical officer as he was intoxicated. The Colpetty police are conducting further investigation, the police media unit said. (Daily Mirror online)
