A 17-year-old student from Sri Lanka, studying at Newport's University in Caerleon, Wales, was found dead in the Caerleon river.

A spokesman for the university described him as a "bright and talented student."

The Reverend William Ritchie, Chaplain of the University of Wales, Newport said, “The University, its staff and students are extremely sad to hear of the untimely death of this student.”

"The death of such a bright and talented member of our community is devastating and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time." (Source: southwalesargus.co.uk)

I failed my A/Ls in 1998, No higher education in SL offered me a place for higher studies including the private institutes. I am lucky my parents send me to UK at age of 20 for higher studies, now i hold an MBA working for a multinational company. if i was in SL i would
probably drive a 3-wheeler now, SL education system is good for book worms!!!

Rajarajacholan as a Tamil myself I am ashamed of your comments and people like you bring disrepute to all other Tamils in this country. I studied at the University of Colombo and most of my close friends to date are Sinhalese. And never for a minute did I feel that there was discrimination towards myself or anyone of any other nationality.

We should all stand together as one nation! we are Sri Lankans...not Tamil! or Sinhalese!.

As for you, please read more, understand how the world works. Just FYI it’s much bigger than that little fish bowl you seem to be living in!

    Nan Thursday, 31 May 2012 08:36 AM

please let us know exactly which part of the world you'd get your separate state ok? we'll try to keep away..

Ane Kale Thursday, 31 May 2012 07:36 AM

Get back to real life mate. Mixed up A/L results and a zillion tution classes means you don't sound right.

    Hasthi Thursday, 31 May 2012 07:18 AM

Ooops! nobel laureate = high standard of education. What a great discovery!

It is a fact that the English Language is not sufficiently spread throughout Sri Lanka, but that does not mean our children lack intelligence (I hope you are not counted) or our education standard is low. If we were not hammered by the 30-year terrorism, we - whether Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burger or Malay -could have done even better. A good proportion of the national wealth and time was wasted on combating the terrorism.

If not for the terrorism, this boy himself would have studied in Sri Lanka. My sympaties to his family.

Aney Manda Thursday, 31 May 2012 07:13 AM

@ Rajarajacholan.. Tamils Talented .. my foot
This is not about Sinhalese & Tamils.
    Its about a drowning.. DUH...

Uk student Wednesday, 30 May 2012 05:38 PM

Apart from everybody was bright and talented, bowing their parents after they die, one of my friends drawned in th uk recently, who was the only child in the family. The reason for this kind of accidnets is south asian students tends to overly enjoying the freedon when they ganged.

    Saradial Thursday, 31 May 2012 06:37 AM

What sound quality education system? Can any body get into University even if S/He capable in Sri Lanka?

A student done agriculture in A/L, can he use the knowledge in his farm? Can a Science student get a job in a Laboratory?

In Sri Lanka School education is just for prepare University entrance. Even graduates are not fit to Job market except some professional Degree holders.

    Dave Thursday, 31 May 2012 05:45 AM

Rather than baseless claims and falsely categorizing ourselves as the best and blaming other countries for accidents, we should look within to see what measures we as a country have taken for the betterment of all our citizens irrespective of their background, to avoid accidents, to avoid blood shed and to prevent lawlessness. I just hope that more people will stop living in fantasies and start to see and accept the reality we live in and be the change!

Ian Bennett Thursday, 31 May 2012 05:38 AM

Unfortunately drownings do happen in the UK just as they do in Sri Lanka and I send my deepest condolances to the family concerned. I do not know the circumstances of this drowning but as regards education I know how important your educatinl system is having lived in your country for a few years, I also consider it to be a superior system to that of the UK Largely due to the lack of dicipline of the students and schools in the UK. The easy access of alcohol in the UK does not help. Students in Sri Lanka work twice as hard as those in the UK as parents there know the value of education. Many parents in the UK have no idea whatsoever and do not help with additional tuition as is practiced in Sri Lanka..

    Nobel Thursday, 31 May 2012 05:21 AM

    Dear Nishantha..
Can you name one Sri Lankan nobel laureate that is a product of Sri Lanka's high quality education system. My experience has been professionals from India, Sri Lanka are very good at sticking to theory and doing as they are told but very poor at being creative and innovative.

    FAZ Thursday, 31 May 2012 05:04 AM

PRAYERS AND THOUGHT ARE WITH THE FAMILY ...DEEPEST CONDOLENCES

    NISHANTHA Thursday, 31 May 2012 04:52 AM

Twinkle twinkle little star.. how I wonder what you are... But it seems you have no knowledge about the very high standard of Public Education System in Sri Lanka which has produced world famous intellects, Doctors, Surgeons, Lawyers, Engineers, IT Experts etc. etc. Most people send their children abroad only as a fashion and for boasting... There are enough and more facilities in SL (State & Private) for anyone to be educated up to the level of PhD.

    Briganthia Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:11 AM

For your information the level of the education system in SL is high, I doubt that you have at least managed to pass through the local A/L and have got in to the university in SL. Anyhow where ever the SL students go, they achieve with high merit due to the best education taught here not any where else. The universities in UK or Us or any part ofthe world offering space for international students to study because of the high IQ level the internationals inherited with their system of education, mainly asians have with their educational level. So stop degrading the SL system of education which given for free for the students in SL!

    Prasanna Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:51 AM

What ever Government that was in power, we got a sound education in Sl thanks to the system, teachers and parents. We enhanced our knowledge with global resources as well.We are in better positions today and no regrets. Its how one look at it and positive attitude that matters rather than blaming systems etc.

    twinkle Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:38 AM

What?? A sound system of education?? In Sri Lanka?? U really have to be mentally unbalanced to call it a sound system...... The reason pple go to UK for higher studies is because it's one of the best, and u learn in English coz it will help wherever u go in the world, learning the Sinhala system only helps in Sri Lanka, and that too iif u work only with no international co operation......so good luck with that.....
Students die wherever, here students die due to crocodiles and stupid motorists......one fellow dies in UK and somehow UK is at fault......don't blame others for the mistake of the individual.

    Rajarajacholan Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:36 AM

Good parents know that good education come from competition. Successive governments have given the entire preference to non-talented singalese for university admissions, in due of competitive talented Tamils. Now there are few Tamils in Universities, and all those bunch of Singalese who got the university admission under various categories ruins everyone’s life. Now parents are sending their children to where all these talented Tamils are studying. No worries when we get the separate country you could send your kids to us as a friendly nation for higher education.

Medawala Mudiyansela Wednesday, 30 May 2012 10:29 PM

I really dont understand why parents have to send their kids overseas when the UPFA gov has established such a sound quality education system ? the very reason past leadership kicked the brits out was so that they could change the education system to Sinhalese now their kith and kin are sending their kids to Briton to educate them in english ???? circle of hypocrisy

Haleem Deen Wednesday, 30 May 2012 10:12 PM

Fayas grow up.How can you hold a country responsible when a foreign student drowns in that country. How many drownings happen in Sri Lanka every year? Can you blame SL for that? Get a life my friend.

    Fayas Wednesday, 30 May 2012 06:41 PM

This is the exampale for careless UK!!!!!!!!
