Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was allegedly detained by US authorities for 90 minutes at White Plains airport, which serves New York.
The actor, who arrived on a private plane, was on the way to Yale University for a function. It is not clear why Khan was detained at the airport.
Khan was earlier detained for two hours in 2009 at Newark airport and was released after India's embassy in the US intervened. The actor had then said he was stopped because he had a Muslim name. US customs officials had denied that Khan had been detained, saying he was questioned.
The Press Trust of India news agency quoted sources as saying that Khan was stopped and questioned for over two hours before being cleared by immigration officials on Thursday.
He was freed after Yale University officials contacted homeland security and customs officials, the BBC's Salim Rizvi in New York said.
"Khan was very very upset over the episode," the CNN-IBN channel said, quoting unnamed sources. Later, he told the students of Yale University that he had been stopped and questioned at the airport.
But, he made light of the incident and joked about it. "Whenever I want to stay at the airport, I should come to the US. "They [officials] asked me what my height was, and I lied. Then they asked me what was my colour. I lied and said I was white," he said.
Khan has appeared in more than 70 films and is considered one of India's most recognisable and popular celebrities. (BBC)
Soon Indian newspapers will say that Sri Lanka was behind this.

Serves the Indians right for bending backwards for the Obamas. India has lost its place in Asia as a regional power.

My Name is Khan and Iam not a Terrorist he he
faqi Friday, 13 April 2012 07:26 AM
The problem is that Khan is not known at all in the US. So if a Shahrukh Khan is on a 'no fly' list then the immigration/border patrol officials have to detain & question him to verify his Identity. Most likely there may be a guy with the same name on the 'no fly' list. This is nothing new, once even the last President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam was detained at immigration as a similar name was on the 'no fly' list.
Sheriff Friday, 13 April 2012 08:13 AM
you should have told my name is khan but not terrorist

The average american is really stupid. If they think they have to detain every "Mohamed" they don't realize that about 1 billion people have a neame Mohamed, and most of them don't live in the US

He was officially detained with recourse to legal action. Can you honestly state this happening in Sri Lanka? just yesterday, we "white vanned" duel citizenship holder and he escaped with his life due to the power he brings with his country of residence.

Shaik Ahamath Friday, 13 April 2012 10:37 AM
No this is not a publicity stunt but complete paranoia by the US Customs. Anybody with Mohamed or Khan and one or two others, undergo the same treatment because the known terrorists in their books have these names. These peoples stupidity is astounding to believe that a determined terrorists first task would not be to travel on a false passport under a different name.

Not a white van, but on a white CIA plane to a foreign CIA prison - known as 'Extraordinary rendition'. Fortunately, Yale University acted quickly or who know what might have happened.
Dhammika Friday, 13 April 2012 10:21 AM
This has nothing to do with Human Rights. I have personally seen at least 20% of the passengers at US Airports are routed through another channel for additional screening which usually takes more than 45 minutes. This is after 9/11 attacks & includes any nationalities.

This actor makes it a habit to make a big issue about these airport "encounters" to gain more publicity. In any airport, there is a routine questioning of passengers especially when similar names are on no-entry lists. But in this case, he uses these minor incidents to promote his movies.
sameer Friday, 13 April 2012 11:21 AM

Riyazi-Dorking Friday, 13 April 2012 11:50 AM
If Barack Obama is just a US citizen, i`m sure he`ll be also be detained in the airport, since "Hussain" is his middle name !!
Abdul Hameed Saturday, 14 April 2012 07:37 PM
He was stopped bcos his name appeared as mulim "khan" ...To be a muslim what qualities he has what muslim community do. Name only the muslim, he zero..... Also we should think one thing even for small thing Indians are making big issue and its an Indian inborn habit. First of we should think that to make issue like this whether he is a president or minister of india. US apply this check not only for khan all muslim who visit US due to terrorist reason. So its normal...Since he an actor, he has blown to the world to make it surpirse...But nothing is surprise here. Only thing we should understand is that its Indian poor habit always try to be head wight in everything..

Nihal Amarasekera Saturday, 14 April 2012 07:06 AM
Why not Airport Authorities come out with the reasons to "detain" "question" so that all the speculations are cleared; whether Human rights, Human lefts, muslim phobia or downright arrogance. May be they consider it as none of we poor souls business. That too is human rights if it surves their interests.

You're just pissed at your own peoples faults.. don't blame the US, west or anyone else for their detail in to security.. If 1billion people have the same name and 2 of them are terrorists that could kill at any moment then the whole 2 billion still need to be screened.. if you wanna call names and hate then I suggest you hate your own who kill and maim in the name of God.. so called holy wars..
warren Sunday, 15 April 2012 07:00 AM
Don't be a moron just cos you are one!! you trying to say that SK is even remotely known as much as Obama is?? if the basis that SK was detained due to his name then that's that.. what did you think, that he was some international superstar?? Obama on the other hand even if he had mohammed, hussein, Bin, al.. or anything of the sort still wont get screened cos the entire world knows who he is.. ignorant mutt..
