Only 23 bribery cases had been concluded in 2010 although the Bribery and Corruption Commission had received 1,637 complaints that year, Parliament was told recently.

Responding to an oral question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake in the House, the Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardene said in 2010 out of the said amount of complaints received in the same year.

However the number of complaints received in 2010 had been less compared to the previous year. Accordingly 3,224 complaints have been received by the commission in 2009.

The amount of funds allocated for the Commission had been reduced to Rs.176 million in 2010 compared to Rs.178 million in 2009.

Mr. Gunawardene explained that orders are given for investigations only if the Commission is satisfied that the complaints are genuine ones.

The Chief Government Whip accepted that the prevalence of bribery and corruption seriously affected the country’s development. (Yohan Perera and Kelum Bandara)
