Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Manju Wanniarachchi’s second urine sample had also tested positive for the banned substance Nandrolone, Sri Lanka Boxing Association confirmed today.

Wanniarachchi, who won gold in the 56 kg category at the Commonwealth Games, failed the first drug test during the Oct 3-14 Games held in New Delhi, India.

The Commonwealth Games Federation said Wanniarachchi's 'A' sample tested positive for the banned anabolic agent 19-Norandrosterone, a metabolite of nandrolone which is a prohibited anabolic agent under category S1 of the WADA list of prohibited substances and methods,'

Then they confirmed the result of the ‘B’ sample on Friday.

According to regulations, Wanniarachchi will be suspended and stripped of his medal after the 'B' sample also confirms the presence of a prohibited substance.

However, Wanniarachchi’s lawyer Kalinga Indratissa said yesterday in a statement that Sri Lanka will challenge the result as the drug test had allegedly not been carried out according to proper method.

The world sportsmen today are fully aware of drug related issues and betting related issues. There is no point pleading innocense after you get caught. Being a professional sportsmen, "I did not know" answer cannot be accepted now and cant forward the blame to some Doctor.

Sorry Manju, put the hand up and accept responsibility.

Ruhunu Puthra Sunday, 14 November 2010 09:44 PM

What matters is not whether you win or lose, but the way you play the game.

    kumara Sunday, 14 November 2010 10:32 PM

Hope and wish manju can make a comback

Smart Aleck Monday, 15 November 2010 01:36 AM

Yes! If he has admitted taking it, there is no point hiring expensive lawyers just to argue technical points and make Sri Lanka a laughing stock in the Sports World.

    Kadira Monday, 15 November 2010 01:56 AM

A typical Sri Lankan Even with all the evidence, trying to pass the buck. Sorry patriot, the "gilmart" did not work.

Manju only you can challenge the decision by winning it next time. We are with you as long as you are innocent.

    malkanthi Monday, 15 November 2010 04:26 AM

There is a special doctor handling all sportmen health issues and so on. Surely manju may not be aware, poor knowledge of auhority concern on such issues, is depriving the hard earned gold medal.

    malkanthi Monday, 15 November 2010 04:39 AM

Sasanka De Silva Monday, 15 November 2010 07:38 AM

Pretend you are invincible until caught red handed, then pretend you were ignorant is a good policy. Such people should be banned for life.

Ex Army Monday, 15 November 2010 08:50 AM

well said Daniel, Sri Lankan officials should conduct the same testing prior to the event. Then nothing to worry about any one trying to tarnish the image of Sri lanka.

    immysl Sunday, 14 November 2010 11:01 AM

Now there's no point pinning to our hopes anymore. All those joys and cheers have been swept away in the wind. So who's gonna be our next "real" boxing champion?

    Sean Sunday, 14 November 2010 11:09 AM

    treshan Sunday, 14 November 2010 11:21 AM

    gayan Sunday, 14 November 2010 11:36 AM

    Anushka Sunday, 14 November 2010 10:44 AM

What a shame. He may have taken it unknowingly, but the damage is done to his career and reputation.

    Dissa Sunday, 14 November 2010 01:02 PM

    Kadira Sunday, 14 November 2010 01:58 PM

It is pointless challenging. Two samples have been tested and both positive. A lesson for other sportsmen and sportswomen , be a sportsman or sportswoman in the sprite of the game.

    stefan Sunday, 14 November 2010 02:31 PM

What were the sports ministry doctors doing before the team left for the games, why was all the participants were not checked before the games,

    San Sunday, 14 November 2010 03:56 PM

Wha is our ministry of sports docotors are doing? How can a player go for a medical treatments without knowing the doctors and his trainers? This is something we must must solve serriously.

    Ratne Sunday, 14 November 2010 03:59 PM

Go for a medal in Olympics.. That is da best way to answer your Critics...

    Gotaibar Sunday, 14 November 2010 04:17 PM

Son Manju, I supported you all alone hoping something of a sincere mistake have deprived the honor of our mother Lanka temporarily. No we know, you have disappointed all of us but, I am not going to hang myself for that. Remember son, rules in Sri Lanka can be one thing today and another thing tomorrow. But once you step out of the country to compete with others, you have to face the truth. You could have come home nothing as a honorable sportsman still you could have been a hero for representing mother Lanka. Now, what did you do,? You, my mother Lanka and all of us look like relatives of Mervy silva and his kudu gang under a corrupt regime. I am going to bury my head until I forget this whole thing.

    sltk2004 Sunday, 14 November 2010 05:02 PM

Yes of course. We can argue based on the usual point : "This is an international conspiracy against our sovereignty. The Western forces are now against us because defeated LTTE"
