Hundreds of pavement hawkers in Kandy say they will oppose moves to forcefully evict them using military force tomorrow. Kandyan authorities however say that the hawkers have to move and will be given an alternative place to continue their businesses.
The decision to evict the hawkers came after the Acting Mayor of Kandy Suminda Wickramasingha told the Kandy Municipal Council members last week that he would clear the Kandy pavements off hawkers even if he had to quit his Chair. “I will resign even if I have to but will evict these hawkers who have made no space for the pedestrians to walk peacefully,” Wickramasingha said.
Wickramasingha confirmed to Daily Mirror online that military and police force will be used if the hawkers refuse to move and start a protest in the area.
Despite the Acting Mayor’s stern decision to evict these hundreds of hawkers, hawkers told Daily Mirror online that they will not leave the area as they have been functioning their businesses on the Kandy pavements for years.
The hawkers who say that they have not been given any official notice to vacate from the Kandy pavements urge the authorities to reconsider especially since military force will be used to evict them. They also state that their businesses are peaceful and cause no harm to the public. (Daily Mirror online)

I remember a time when walking kandy's streets used to be a relaxing pleasure. Now we have hawkers, sweep tickets screamers, pickpockets, touts, and the lot. Way to go mayor, wish you could tell the Rajapaksas to go flya kite too.

The Acting Mayor's action should be commended and copied by all other Local Councils in Sri Lanka. The pedestrians in Sri Lanka do not have a choice other than walking on the road pavement due to this so called street businessmen.

I never walk through the "Cargills" lane in Kandy.. Think about all possible reasons for this.. Good move by the mayor!! But make sure this won't harm their chance of earning the daily bread and butter... find a good alternative solution for them.

its about time to take off such illegal businesses. Not only do they narrow the area which is allocated to walk but also the pedestrians are robbed due to the crowded pavement. This should not only be done in Kandy but in the forte area as well. The hawkers are allowed to do their business during April and December (festive season) but they are trying to keep the stalls even after this grace period is given.
Acting mayor hats off to u if u could pull this off.

It is a very good idea, I am from kandy and know how dificult it is to walk on the footpath when these hawkers are on it, should collect their contact details and give them a place in Bogambara prison when it moves to Pallekale , what we need in kandy is a Mall ,
and the KCC should display large Notice boards baning these Hawkers,

It is ironic that pavements hawkers are evicted while they are encouraged to put up businesses in and around Jaffna marring the beauty of the city. What a hypocritic policy!
Monday, 26 April 2010 01:34 AM
Well what about Nuegoda where it is not possible to walk on the pavements at all.

"They (Hawkers) also state that their businesses are peaceful and cause no harm to the public".. LOL, they are a pain, people have to walk on the main road cause there is no room on the pavements, they harass women and if by mistake someone steps on their goods they abuse them in utter filth, these fellows have shops in Torrington Complex, but they rent them out to others and then come to the pavement. They should be kicked off the streets for the trouble they cause pedestrians!

The Mayor does not have to think about an alternatiive place. This was illegal occupation of the pavement and they need to be punished for this. What havoc do they create for the pedestrians in Kandy. Good Move!!

what about the high class encroachments of Colombo. People who encroach in to the road and other public property stating they are developing these lands... illegally!

Cleaning should start at the top.
