Fire at BMICH premises

A fire has erupted in a temporarily built building at the BMICH premises a short while ago and the fire brigade was called in to douse the fire, police said.

Police said the fire was completely doused by now and that no injuries were reported.

Addressing a press conference after the incident Technology and Research Minister Champika Ranawaka said that the fire was erupted at one of the exhibition halls. “We are continuing with the young inventors’ exhibition as scheduled in other buildings,” he said.

Meanwhile the Police said that the fire was not an act of sabotage.

“Initial investigations revealed that the fire was caused by the leakage of petrol from an oven built by a young inventor at the exhibition that was scheduled be commenced this morning,” Police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said.

He also said that the fire was erupted at a temporally built hall that was used for the media center for the CHOGM summit, is completely destroyed.

    This incident is an eye opener for the organizers of this type of mass gathering events to take utmost care to ensure the public safety. It is advantageous to consider fire brigade and an ambulance to be stationed at the venue during the event and also to consider of arranging a consultant.
