Even China, the country that provides the largest amount of loans to Sri Lanka had charged that the Sri Lankan government was corrupt, main Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said at a seminar held on the 2014 budget at the Jathika Sevaka Sangama Headquarters today.

He said a Chinese national newspaper had highlighted that corruption in Sri Lanka, Malawi and Morocco government sectors was on the rise.

“China is the country that generously provides funds and loans to Sri Lanka. But now they have also realised how corrupt our rulers and the government are,” he said.

He said the national debt was Rs. 1.8 trillion in 2005 after so many governments ruled the country and said the national debt has increased to Rs. 6.6 trillion under this government.

“This shows that Rs. 4.8 trillion had been additionally spent during only eight years,” he said. He said the increased Rs. 4.8 trillion was a result of corruption. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Truth be Told Tuesday, 10 December 2013 01:49 PM

This sounds like the pot calling the kettle black!

    CHINA DID NOT LEND MONEY

Sylvia - Will the authorities investigate or just keep a file until the moment the person goes against them? The countries having good marks in the Anti Corruption Index are those where people can criticise their authorities without fear. If everyone keeps mouths shut, hiding behind 'our dirty laundry' that laundry will become more dirty. You have acknowledged the presence of 'Dirty Laundry' and,, from what you say about him, can be as guilt as Ranil on this whereas I have no personal knowledge of corruption in the country.

    GC Tuesday, 10 December 2013 12:33 PM

So, is it not the fault of our people (if you meant it was Ranil's, whom even the JVP said is a non-corrupt person). Anyhow, we can accept what the Chinese say as they should be the ones who can know the truth of this best.

There is no proper independent authority in the country to report these matters. All institutions are run by political henchmen.

Cindy Montrose Tuesday, 10 December 2013 12:20 PM

Sylvia Halk... You ask to provide the evidence to the proper authority. Can you please let all the Sri Lankans know who are these proper authorities are. I don't think they are there, are they Sylvia?

Sylvia Haik Tuesday, 10 December 2013 12:12 PM

This airing of our dirty laundry in public will earn us nothing but contempt from our enemies.please, if you have any evidence of corruption please provide them to the proper authorities.

    Goofy Tuesday, 10 December 2013 11:40 AM

We all know Sri Lanka is corrupt and it is the biggest problem faced by Sri Lanka. but no one listens to you or takes you seriously.
