Director of the National Hospital Dr. Anil Jaasinghe said today that the Doctors of the national hospital may continue their trade union action beyond the planned 24 hours

The Doctors began a token strike at 2 PM yesterday after a hand grenade was thrown at the residence of Consultant surgeon and member of the Sri Lanka Medical Council Dr. Lalith Abaya Ranasinghe yesterday.

The strike was initially planned to be held for 24 hours, ending at 2 PM today.

However Dr. Jaasinghe said that it may continue further.

“All emergency units and admissions are continuing their work. However, routine work has come to a standstill and this may go one beyond the 24 hour deadline” he said. (By Hafeel Farisz) (Pix by Nisal Baduge)

Criminals have to be taught a lesson and this is the language they understand, their own language. Decent methods have failed in Sri Lanka

Strike should be continued so that they can do private practice few days more days.

Why don't you wait to see whether this is a politically motivated attack. Docs should come public with evidence and then the general public will rally with you. Now what you do is take poor people as hostage - as usual

    lucky Saturday, 18 August 2012 12:16 AM

Prof .... Are you going to teach lessons by taking patients in to hostage?

peeda mossa Friday, 17 August 2012 05:10 PM

If throwing a grenade at a doctor's residence is reason enough for the doctors to stop work, then if a patient dies as a result of the strike, would the patient's kin be justified in throwing a grenade at the doctors ?

Our Sri Lankans does not care for their own or the development of the country.

    True. True.

Doctors in SriLanka are good at only one thing - earning lots of money doing private practice, Muadalalis. They cannot talk or act in a professional manner to resolve by negotiation. Do we have any evidence this Dr LAR, senior surgeon had a grenade thrown for some matter in his private life or business (PP) matter. He may have over charged or inappropriately charged a poor patient.

Wake up GMOA and medical students - start thinking and being rational. Dont act like idiots. Learn from your past mistakes

Don't try to deflect your responsibility. This is the typical Sri Lankan attitude - for example "If Politicians do horrible things, why can't we do the same?". If you want to drop down to the level of politicians & underworld criminals, well thats your choice. Oh the Miracle of Asia!

This country has reached such low level that even Medical Doctors who belong to such exalted profession should resolve to strike action.

Look at those pics ! How pathatic ! No sign of hope anymore

Its all very nice telling all of them should think of the poor people and the poor country. But what does the government do to care about the poor people by taking necessary stringent action against wrong-doers, rapists, looters, drug dealers etc. who are part of the govenment.

    dechee Friday, 17 August 2012 08:44 AM

Well said.. People such as Fishermen, farmers, miners are the poorest and it is them and not these sort of people, work hard on behalf of the country. these so called professionals have learned ,thanks to free education and now in these positions thanks to innocent people's tax money . even after that they think they are deserved more and more. it is unfair..

    Dr X Friday, 17 August 2012 08:28 AM

What other protests can the doctors make other than strike? this is a lawless state, where politicians twist the rules to their advantage? Its not only doctors, engineers and university staff who need to uplift the country and think of the so called poor people and poor country. The leaders and policitians and everyone else also need to contribute.

    Fusion Friday, 17 August 2012 08:20 AM

So, 1 doctor faced a criminal act and the whole bunch decides to torture the people who desperately need them? Those poor, helpless who cannot afford private hospitals? If a single patients develops serious complications or worse death due to this strike.

    Piyumal Friday, 17 August 2012 07:53 AM

As far as I understood University staff is fighting for the free education of so called "poor people".

    Gune Friday, 17 August 2012 07:14 AM

engineers, university staff, medical doctors all are going on strike. What a country is this ? do they help to up lift this country of pulling it further down ?
all of them should think once again the poor people and the poor country.
Its the duty of you all. Decisions is yours please.

    niyaz Friday, 17 August 2012 07:00 AM

Does anybody care about law and order in this land anymore? Very soon it will be - each one for himself and god for us all.

independent minister Friday, 17 August 2012 06:44 AM

Volly bowling hand grenades, national sport. strike the culprits down and stop the strike.

    SudhuPancha Friday, 17 August 2012 06:42 AM

@ wimale- is there justice in this country anymore????????

    wimale Friday, 17 August 2012 06:23 AM

What do they plan to achieve by going on strike? Yes throwing a grenade at someone's house is criminal but everyone going on strike won't undo it. Seek justice instead.

    Freedom Friday, 17 August 2012 06:02 AM

good doctors...The decisions what they took is only pain full for the poor people only.... Government don't care
