6 December 2012 12:37 pm - 90     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

A A A

Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake has walked out of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) proceeding a short while ago stating that she has no faith in it, sources said.
Her lawyers also informed the committee that they had no faith in the PSC process and would not participate in its proceedings hereafter.

The PSC met today at 2.30 pm in the committee room 1 of the Parliamentary complex and the proceedings went on till 6 pm, with a small break for tea. There had however been a lot of arguments between the two sides.

The CJ’s lawyers protested saying documents had not been provided to her to prove the charges levelled against her.

It is learnt that some government ministers had made insulting remarks at the CJ during the proceedings. The CJ appeared for the third time, and the PSC is expected to meet tomorrow. (KB & YP)

Whatever said and done, she is one tough cookie...... respect!

    kirala Friday, 07 December 2012 05:06 AM

I suppose her ladyship didn't think that her ladyship would be downgraded when she was appointed CJ by the same clowns through a back-door process?

    You reap what you saw.

    Thomas Friday, 07 December 2012 05:00 AM

Now it is time all the 4 opposition PSC members withdraw from the hearing, showing their objection to the improper hearing .

    Vishnu Friday, 07 December 2012 04:03 AM

The procedure seems to be unfair, but that the procedure laid down by the Constitution as it stands today is that. If the procedure was unfair, steps could have been taken to amend the law prior to this saga. After a charge sheet is served in the ordinary course of events, can an accused walk out of court stating that the laid down procedure is unfair or the punishment is severe?

Calistus Jayatilleke Friday, 07 December 2012 04:01 AM

So, what next. Ex-parte inquiry by the government appointed members since it is expected that opposition nominated members will resign anyway. Then it will be like a wedding party without the bride. This whole exercise is a big black mark on the govenment which has already got a bad record when it comes to freedom of expression and fair justice.

    chaminda Friday, 07 December 2012 05:11 AM

yea well said..everybody should respect law and and constitution, how come some one reject appearing before committe investigations against them.. this is a joke ..no one has a right to avoid inquires..saying no faith on judges...

    sirisena Friday, 07 December 2012 05:21 AM

Already the government members of the select committee sat with a predetermined decision on their mind. It is very clear, by hearing to the comments made by the government MP's.

The government initially messed around with SF, now they are messing around with SB ( Shirani Bandaranayake). But be mindful, she can be a real threat to the ruling party, if she enters politics.

    s.kumara Friday, 07 December 2012 05:19 AM

Very bad tactical move. This is what govt want. Her days will be mumbered

nicky karunarathna Friday, 07 December 2012 05:15 AM

If the judiciary does not know how to respect the law of the land, how come ordinary citizens respect them when they are appearing beofre them? This woman is really behaving like a spoit brat. Doesn't she know how to argue a case's rights and worngs and give a commentary to media what's happening, if she really right Media also waiting to get news from horse's mouth and she can really help the citizen to know who is right rather than running away from justice. Now it seems, this woman has tarnish emage of entire court system, which distribute equal justice to all.If this done by ordinary person, she could be jailed by the our court system for contempt. Hence she should be charge for the same offence now.

    AIM Thursday, 06 December 2012 01:07 PM

I totally agree. How can a class action of the ruling members of Parliament in turn become the ruling members of the PSC and become the Plaintiff, Jury,Judge and the Executioner?

If you cant find an untainted Jury ( difficult in Sri Lanka for sure) it should be taken to the International Court of Justice for natural justice.
