The parents of an 11-month old baby girl, who had died of an unidentified malady, are reported to have been asked to take the body from Metigahatenne Madulsima Hospital in a three -wheeler to the Badulla Hospital mortuary, a distance of 45 kilometers. Arriving at the hospital, the thoroughly exhausted and stressed out parents were in for a further shock when the Badulla Hospital authorities refused to accept the body to be kept at the mortuary. Thereafter the parents were compelled to take the body to the Nuwara Eliya Hospital in the same three-wheeler.

The child had been treated for about four months at the Metigahatenne hospital for some kind of cutaneous itching, and when her condition had worsened she had to be admitted to the same hospital where she died.

The hospital authorities had ordered the body of the child to be wrapped in a polythene bag and handed over to the parents to be taken to the Badulla Hospital for further investigations.

The post mortem examination was to be held at the Nuwara Eliya Hospital where the body was taken after it was refused to be accepted by the Badulla Hospital Mortuary staff. (Palitha Ariyawansa)

i hope.... those who are responsible for this inhuman act will not be dead soon and will suffer till their last minute of their horrible life without even having someone to touch n clean them. no one should collect their body after they die, not even a dog.
may the soul of little girl rest in peace and god bless the parents and may the god give them the strength to handle the situation.

The head of the Madulsima Hospital should be fired immediately. The hospital is responsible for any patient who died while being an inpatient. The parents should be objected immediately and kept the baby at the hospital and reported the case to the Provincial Health Authorities. Absurd work by everyone.

Do these hospitals have an ambulance? Why did they not send the body by ambulance.? How could they be so callouss & uncaring to ask the parents to carry the body in a three wheeler?
Which is very traumatic. Where is the humanity in a situation like this? Very sad.

Mankinda, I welcome for your kind consideration for this type of problems. my question is that how many sortcomings are happening here like this. the one exposed to media is this, can you fund to millions of same kind of problems. We sri lankans pay huge amount of money as tax, what happen to our money, treatment to politician in abroad, huge ministers in the parliament and huge allocation to them for their exp. including for their keeps, family run gov. institution in loss state etc. are few examples. why we want to spent our money for politician misused public funds.

    ramakumar Friday, 30 November 2012 06:52 AM

Very recently Minister Nimal De Sripala challenged to prove shortage of medical drugs in the govt. hospital. Please refer this also to him. We the public can wait and see the result of his action.

Ananda Ariyarathne Friday, 30 November 2012 06:37 AM

Mahendra, I totally agree with you.Do not blame the ministers who are also politicians. With the exception of a few they are a set of clowns providing amusement to people. In India their Cinema does it.In Sri Lanka most of the politicians have taken over that responsibility. This includes all the parties. Our medical facilities are like 'orchids' some get help to grow and maintain while others have to live on the 'air'. So, medical personnel do not bother as they cannot solve the problems. The Regional Heads and Country's Head of Health Authority do not wish to antagonize the Politicos. They either do not report or hide problems. The whole country is becoming sick. But do not think changing the government is the solution. It is always a case of 'wrong people at the right places'.

Unbelievable....if such heartless people are to be working in hospitals what will happen to the other patients.....???

    Mahendra Friday, 30 November 2012 05:34 AM

Blame the politicians but nobody else as in Western countries these things are not common! as they have plan in place for these typse of situations. Hospital staff does not care unless it's a politician's child.

    Mahendra Friday, 30 November 2012 05:30 AM

What a sad, sad story? Why is there so much agony to these people? Where are the politicians whom got voted to power by this very family? Perhaps they are travelling in super comfort a/c Mecedes! Why don't you stupid politicians have a plan for this type of situation? Don;t you politicians have a plan to give easy life for these type of families in such circumstances????

    Niv Friday, 30 November 2012 05:29 AM

Not only relevant hospital authorities entire community is like this. These people are become more selfish by looking at out politicians and leaders. This is what out politicians want and they new we need a society with heartless individuals. not a united society. then politicians will be safe all the time...

    wild Friday, 30 November 2012 05:09 AM

How heartless can the hospital authorities can be ??
