Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, today launched 12 editions of the Hindu Encyclopedia which was compiled by a number of scholars and experts from the Hindu religion, in a project which started from 1988.
The encyclopedias, which are compiled in Tamil was presented to Hindu Religious Heads and some Tamil parliamentarians which included Minister Douglas Devananda.
The project was headed by Professor S. Pathmanathan who is a Tamil historian, academic and author and who is also the Chancellor of the University of Jaffna.
The encyclopedias include in length, details about the Hindu religion and its practices, globally. This is the first detailed encyclopedia of its kind ever launched in the world.

This is not the first Hindu encyclopaedia. The earlier one was edited by an Indian-American whose name I forget. As for Hindu philosophies, there’s an encyclopaedia in several volumes, compiled by Karl Potter which has key translations from the Darshanas.
