Based on a memorandum submitted by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, the Cabinet today decided to import 20 sniffer dogs at a cost of Rs.46 million to be used to combat the smuggling of narcotics into the country.
The sniffer dogs, especially trained in detecting narcotics, will be deployed at the airport.
A Cabinet source said the dogs would be handled by Air Force personnel and the first time that such dogs would be imported to this country. (Kelum Bandara)

There is no need to import. Plenty of this narcotic sniffing variety is available around Diyawannawa.

This would have been started years ago.

We have one of the best dogs who can be trained for the job, the stray dog !! When properly trained it has the most intelligence awareness lifespan and discipline to combat the problem ... but our problem is the two legged dogs doesn't know how to train them or treat them.

DOGS ARE 100% RELIABLE AS THEY DON'T TAKE BRIBES. (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BONES)

Drug Smugglers caught should be chopped in pieces and given as food to the Dogs as a reward.

which minister will benefit of this import.
ICE Wednesday, 30 January 2019 11:58 AM
Already benefited. However, So we have the dog. What about the special check area, along with well trained security personnel, in a view to check the "detected" bag, until the hidden drugs are found. Imagine the rush during a busy hour. Dogs only could sniff. Nothing more. The rest depends on the human who would do the real check. Hence there is a larger dark area here. Your guess is good as mine.

We have plenty at Diyawanna Kennel. Those dogs at times import and distribute. Why import Sniffer dogs ? Our naturally trained, not only they can detect, but also gulp them when detected. Former leader of the pack used to control the pack. Consult the former pack leader. It is one qualification to deal with drugs to become a member of the Diyawanna Kennel Club.

I won't be surprised if the dogs surround the Diyavannawa.

10 dogs would have been more than enough for a relatively small airport at the start. More importantly, it is worth the investment to learn how to train our own dogs of a particular species, saving gigantic costs.
