All zebra crossings in the country which have been painted in yellow will be painted white from December 3, the Road Development Authority (RDA) said today.
RDA Chairman Nihal Sooriyaarachchi told Daily Mirror that the zebra crossings would be changed in line with international standards. “Implementing this will be advantageous as the white crossing can be seen more clearly, especially in the night,” he said.
A ceremony to launch the project will be held in each province, with the ceremony for the Western Province scheduled to be held at Green Path on December 3.
“We have informed the Attorney General that the colour of all pedestrian crossings will be changed to white within a year,” he said.
A Gazette notification was also published on the project, Sooriyaarachchi said.(Darshana Sanjeewa)

The yellow line on the black road should have been called tiger crossings.

Many other important things to be given priority.

Yellow....... yellow....... White will not change the unruly motorists and Pedestrians.

White lines are not visible during wet nights. If they still insist on white let them make it luminous.

there are more important things to be done why so much concerned on changing the colour of zebra crossing. RDA first lay proper roads and maintain them well remove all illegal structures which obstructs the drive way and etc. ........ think there are much more to do dont waste public tax money via DM Android App

How about a solar powered light at the two ends of the crossing specially in the night. Some pedestrians cannot be seen when in dark clothing.
Ajja Monday, 21 November 2016 12:44 PM
First we have to implement law and order in the country before wasting money on such things.Colur will not change the mentality of drivers it respect to road rules, pedestrians will make a good driver.Majority of our drivers are road Killers.
Gayan Perera Monday, 21 November 2016 11:31 AM
And how much is this going to cost? Did you analyse accident data and conclude that this was the most urgent issue to tackle (instead of stricter rules for bus drivers, annual testing of vehicles on brakes, lights, improved driving lesson requirements, doors on both buses and trains required to be closed during driving?) I very much doubt that much research went into this decision

Before the good yellow lines are erased with much costs, please replace first the ones which were washed away by rain and abrasion. Better use the funds to switch on the streetlights which were built at considerable costs and are never in use, best example ist Thalawathugoda Junction and the road to Pelawatta, Battaramulla.Apart from this, the new Zebra Lines are equipped with light reflectors, so no urgent need to spend money for changing the colour. Saving money means not spending it.

This is a good idea but cannot implement until all teansport with doors closed will need to be equipped with air conditioning

Sri Lankan roads have so many road markings in white. the Crossing in yellow was better to keep a difference. the donkeys who drive ignore the yellow and stop on it. when its white they wont even notice the difference with the rest of the line markings on the road via DM iOS App

What is the purpose of having ceremonies to launch the project in each province. Also changing the colour will not have any effect in Sri Lanka because in this country even at traffic lights it is impossible for the pedestrians to cross the road safely. This is a country where there is no discipline on the roads. The reason for the change is hilarious(Reason given: yellow is used only in countries where there is snow).

we are proud to have padestrian crossings of international standard. What a pleasure it will be to have used these crossings.

Heard that a paint company has more than enough stocks in white paints. In piliyandala and Maharagama area White paints are half of the cost compared to other colors. some paint shops offer unbelievable discount with warranty
Good Road Rules for Private Bus Monday, 21 November 2016 11:50 AM
Like in Singapore - The Bus Doors has to be closed - Only Open at the Bus Stands.. This prevent the over loading and accidentsSince Passengers will not want be in Crowded Closed Bus.Also the Driver and Conductor will be compelled to take passengers only at the bus stands . The passengers too will be disciplined . ( since the passengers are the root cause for the Drivers to stop at other places then the Bus Stands)When this is carried out there will Strick by the Bus wanting to Stop Every where including the Zebra Crossing.

I THINK WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IS , FIXING COLOUR LIGHTS AT EACH ZEBRA - CROSSING , AS SOME PASSENGERS CROSS THE ROADS THINKING ZEBRA CROSSING IS THEIR OWN PROPERTY.
Prazi Monday, 21 November 2016 11:44 AM
I wonder much research went into this decision before you makes comments Gayan. You sounds like live away from Sri Lanka. Anyway your thoughts are good but far more practical and can never implement easily soon. So lets start with what we can now while we educating our drivers some manners.
Bawa Monday, 21 November 2016 11:42 AM
Each time a government agency implements a change there is a lot of debate on whether it is the most urgent thing to do. Let's start somewhere at least a discussion on pedestrian safety is taking place in this country.
ANTON Monday, 21 November 2016 11:39 AM
THANKS FOR NOT PROPOSING GREEN OR BLUE.
das Monday, 21 November 2016 11:32 AM
