The management of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in Malabe has posted an advertisement on a website under the Commercial Property section yesterday (13) to sell its building and the land for a value of Rs. 3.5 billion.
Under the description, it says ‘3 Acre;1 Root; 38 Perches land in Malabe ideal for university or international school. Two complete, five- story building with one incomplete building with elevator facilities to the top floor and an auditorium that can accommodate 600 attendees.'
The Daily Mirror learnt that the management of the institution is reportedly hoping to construct a hospital in another location after selling the building and the land.
The SAITM authorities were reported to have been planning to sell off its assets to settle its loans.
SAITM was miring in controversy after the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) protested against private medical education. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

A private medical faculty is needed in Sri Lanka. To stop students moving into Bangladesh and India and returning to Lanka. And secondly to break the monopoly of the doctors here.

Shan, how many people of this county could understand the value of ventures of this kind? The majority of Sri Lankans are mired in archaic thinking, and the GMOA and "regime" are plunging them into oblivion further.

Private medical colleges are nowhere in the world. for sure not in US, or Canada. That is how the educated society is trying to save lives. All medical colleges are public, but fee paying.

Needed provided that minimum entry results are at least 3 Bs or above. Otherwise, the quality of the Doctors and the plight of the patients would be severely compromised. We already have enough Doctors coming out, so foreign students should be banned. There are many who attend to Pvt ones as low as one simple pass

SAITM had a special place to produce MBBS doctors who were not traumatized by entry ragging specially of the unbelievably sadistic sexual type. Serving nation now are both NCMC and SAITM MBBS doctors who paid privately and historically for their valuable medical education.

Very unfortunate..we will hav an impact on our health sector in da comin years badly..our money flows to india..bangladesh..nepal..pakistan..russia..china and even malaysia..every student take out nearly Rs.10 million each..we must start a private medical institute and make it to world class step by step..

GMOA can set up a private medical college for Docters children and others to prevent local students seeking admissions in Medical Colleges Abroad

Stupid fools in GMOA. Every country have private education in every field including Medicine. Foolish and selfish doctors in GMOA failed SAITM attempt with the help of Rajapakshas. See how they are silent in this administration. GMOA given everything that they need.

why not convert to a high school for children all around in Colombo
Ranaweera Friday, 15 January 2021 10:26 AM
GMOA is a selfish group who wants to have fewer Doctors in Sri Lanka so that they can earn money from Private practice. A private medical college can save foreign exchange and also become an earner by admitting students from other countries. The selfish GMOA wants to keep their pockets full.

Bad luck SAITM, if the present Government was in power instead of Yahapalanaya, by this time their doctors will be practicing.
