The office of a popular retail website- Kapruka.com- based in Colombo was seized by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) today for selling goods for exorbitant prices.
The website has listed one tin of canned fish at a price of Rs.550, a kilo of big onion for Rs. 500, a kilo of dhal for Rs.180 and a kilo of wheat flour for Rs. 350.
The CAA said the company has agreed to pay back the excess amount they have charged from consumers.
The CAA has taken steps to file legal action against the company for selling overpriced goods during the curfew.

Why do we need an American Basil to get involved in moving goods? Can't we find a Sri Lankan to do this? Do we need an American?
Ganesh Wednesday, 25 March 2020 07:09 PM
Should be fined and banned from conducting business for at least 6 months.
Thilina Wednesday, 25 March 2020 07:10 PM
In developed countries for such instances the owner is jailed for 5 days and that fears them. It's good to update the laws.
BuffaloaCitizen Wednesday, 25 March 2020 07:11 PM

I think big government should keep its hands off business, and let customers decide which business offers a cheaper price.
Nihal Dharmatileke Wednesday, 25 March 2020 08:12 PM
Mostly expats order itesms via Kapruka therefore they think they don’t mind paying these prices but forget that they too got to work hard to earn, so this kind of thinking is absolutely appalling very substandard business ethics.
Sambo Wednesday, 25 March 2020 08:15 PM
This correct. My sisters son had made an order through Kapruka and they charged exorbitant amounts but very long delay in delivering the good.
Selva Wednesday, 25 March 2020 08:21 PM
Very good work by Consumer affairs. Kapruka is a rip-off site. They should be taught a lesson not to cheat people by charging higher prices than price tagged.
Chryshan K Wednesday, 25 March 2020 08:24 PM
At a time most of companies giving things free to support people, Kapruka is trying to grab this opportunity to loot every penny from innocent people
Fathima Kader Wednesday, 25 March 2020 08:29 PM

The problem with wealthy Sri Lankan corporates is that many claim to have the country at heart, but will fleece their fellow countrymen at the drop of a hat!
Dinusha Kalupahana Wednesday, 25 March 2020 09:42 PM
Ban this place doing business in Sri Lanka or other countries. Then only others will learn.
RL Rajakaruna Wednesday, 25 March 2020 09:45 PM
His trades lisenceshould be cancelled. And he actually should get a sentence in jail for exploiting the public on essential goods at a time of national crisis. These are the criminal elements in our society. Let's seeof the govt takes positive action .or walk the talk. As he is already caught.

rupadevi monerawela Wednesday, 25 March 2020 10:51 PM
IT may be, but most of the orders kapruk gets are from sri lankan's abroad to help their relatives in Sri Lanka at this time of need. the prices you have quoted are only a few dollars or GB pounds. there are local traders you must raid as the sri lankans living and working in SL do not have the money to buy rice and other essentials they need because of the local traders are making money from a bad situation. The beneficiary of kapruk is our government. this is a foreign exchange earner. This is the time of New Year and those abroad are helping their less fortunate kith and kin living in Sri Lanka.. Small minded economists and jealous group is attacking a custom of looking after ones own less fortunate relatives. We don't need communist behaviour in Sri Lanka.
rupadevi monerawela Wednesday, 25 March 2020 10:54 PM
who are these ignorant fools who are stopping the government earning a few foreign exchange. what economics do they know.
Senarath Kumara Wednesday, 25 March 2020 10:55 PM
I never though you Kapruka would do that.
"The CAA said the company has agreed to pay back the excess amount they have charged from consumers."
Shame on you !!!
Ratnam Ponnudurai Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:17 AM
The licence of the Company should be cancelled with immediate effect, for taking advantage of calamitous situation in the country. The directors of the company should be arrested and produced before the court. What are the relevant authorities waiting for? This firm is undermining the sincere efforts of the President.
Yana Fernando Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:51 AM
Rupadevi. You must be kidding. These buggers have always been a bloody ripoff.

Anushka Lovell Thursday, 26 March 2020 10:08 AM
NO surprise. I placed an order for some gift items to be delivered. The order was placed on 20 March to be delivered on 25 March. Items were NOT delivered, nor was I advised of any updates until I wrote and complained to them. They are frauds. Many times they charge for gift items that are NOT in stock and then take a long time to refund the money. This particular order I have still NOT received the refund nor have the items been delivered. They were well aware of the situation in the country, if they knew they couldn't make the deliveries or get the items - they should have NOT accepted ANY orders. They take the customers money and stay quiet. They were selling hand sanitzer small bottles for exorbitant rates. Fontana mango juice 1 litre which is 580 outside they are selling for over Rs 1000 rupees and that is what they have charged me. Fontana Cranberry juice which is 685 outside is sold by them for Rs 1050 ....In fact they have overcharged me on many items. I want a refund!!
Adwani Thursday, 26 March 2020 10:15 AM
If Kapruka belongs to Ravi, Gammon Billai, etc. no raid
Harry Tuesday, 31 March 2020 05:49 PM
Kapruka is very close to it. He will never be charged. Case closed.
