President Maithripala Sirisena today said that both 18th and 19th Amendments to the Constitution should be abolished.
President made these remarks during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Housing to mark the 40th Anniversary of the National Housing Authority this morning.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was also present when President Sirisena made this sentiment but the PM had already spoken before the President.
“The 18th Amendment to the Constitution is a dictatorial one but the 19th Amendment prevented a sound government,” the President said.
“Prime Minister, we are accused of pulling the government to either side. This is happening because of the 19th Amendment. People say that it is time to go back and reflect on the mistakes we have made.
“The 18th amendment is also draconian as it paves the way for dictatorship” the President said.
Ha Ha Ha! He is chipping in for the midnight cowboy!

Best is to adjust/amend 19A so that the grey areas are removed as 19A has moved country in the correct direction for a democracy..

As a Yahapaalana voter, who voted for a "Mayithree yugayak" I do not agree with it.
Anmanpan Sunday, 23 June 2019 03:06 PM
The new constitution is needed. There is no need to draft a new on. You the one given to us by the British, the home of democracy.

What a lovely strategy. At the beginning of good governance our big man enjoyed his position with giggling laugh. Now he likes the amended amendments
Personaporpez Sunday, 23 June 2019 05:05 PM
Why can't this person keep his mouth shut? Very soon we do not need to listen to him? Five years intensively involved in pulling the legs of the people trying to take the country forward.
Ram Sunday, 23 June 2019 05:14 PM
Bloody rascal came to power promising 19A and now wants it removed together with 18A that he supported when MR brought it. What he wants is power and unlimited terms.
Antony Sunday, 23 June 2019 05:51 PM
Ranil is JR’s nephew. JR was the best crook out of all the world political leaders. Ranil is no different to JR. Whatever Sirisena says Ranil will do what he wants. He has master plans to win the next election

He is happy to say now since he is unable to come next time because of his blunder who brought disaster to the nation as a whole .
vithura Sunday, 23 June 2019 07:15 PM
Abolishing the executive presidency system and re-introducing Westminster style system of governance that served the country well, vis-a-vis in preserving fundamental democratic principles of governance, would put the country back on the right path.
malij Sunday, 23 June 2019 08:21 PM
Nothing wrong with the 19th amendment. It is the man who is trying to grab back the powers abolished by the 19th.
Hassanda Sunday, 23 June 2019 09:52 PM
What a Joker President
The Guy who voted for the 19th

At this point does it matter ? The new constitution proposed by the next president "Nagananda Kodituwakku" will be enacted immediately after his election, by the people for the people. The lose ends are tightening up ..... get ready and pack your bags for the retirement !!
