The Maskeliya-Samimale main road near the St Joseph Tamil School has caved in causing obstructions to the flow of traffic.
Maskeliya Police had closed the road yesterday afternoon. Police said torrential rains experienced in the area last morning resulted in the caving in of a culvert affecting a large portion of the road. Residents of the area said that storm water from the Maskeliya Town had flowed into the Maussakele Reservoir through that culvert. They pointed out that more than 20 houses and the school below the affected area was exposed to great danger. Police requested the drivers to use alternative roads until the road was renovated. Meanwhile 26 line rooms in the Gawarawila Plantation in Samimale had gone under water causing hardship to several families of estate workers.
